Hi Joy. Yes, I think Ben's favourite meal is his Sunday roast - he loves all his veggies! He also loves bacon, but doesn't like it in a sandwich - says it ruins the flavour! AL |

I think healthy eating in children should start at a young age. When my gt nephew was young, he was allowed the odd sweet as a treat, but was mainly given grapes, raisins and apples as regular 'treats'. His tastes have never really changed - If there's a buffet, for example, he will leave the unhealtier options and go for a plate of salad with some meat. For dessert he prefers a yoghurt. If he goes to a burger bar he will usually choose the chicken. He's only 13, but his tastes appeared to have stemmed from what he was given when younger. AL |

When I read your first posting Muffy, my immediate reaction was 'that's rich, Boris - look at the size of you, and look at the size of Jamie'. :-) |

Boris Johnson is an overweight fool, who has eaten far too many pies for his own good, by the looks of him. AS for mothers pushing pies and chips through the railings - ever heard the expression 'killing with kindness'. OC |

Hayley - dangerous ground. I've put my soap box away for the moment but the answer is probably Too many. Look at the number of bus routes that are now in the London area. Little buses winding round the roads and picking up few OAPs (hmm Me ??) but seems few people are fare paying in real terms. Now if those same buses were to be only for school children up to 9 a.m. and from 3.30 p m then a great deal of traffic would be taken off the roads. Also it would mean that children who vandalise the buses would be pinned down to the schools that the buses serve. Come to think of it the OAPs bus passes are only valid from 9.30 a.m. so the cost of diverting a few buses would be Zero. Sue - goes to show we have lots of 'experts' who haven't got a clue and many have no children of their own. |

Hi Roxanne, yes my niece was amazed to, I think like her charts they haven't been undated in years, when babies were supposed to be chubby. Needless to say she will not be giving baby any fried food. Sue |

I agree Joe, it is a shame it is all about politics and money, I would gladly pay more tax if I knew it would be spent on increasing safety for children in parks so they could have more freedom and exercise safely. You have made a valid point there. |

Continued .... As for all the junk stuff if it is so bad why doesn't the giovernment step in and ban it ? If itr was over-the-counter meds or drugs officialdom is the first to stop whatever being sold. And all these mums who say that Jamie is correct - do they stop buying all the junk in the super markets ? nuggets of so-called chicken should be banned right away and many of the other junk foods that finds its way into homes, or have mums forgotten how to cook ? or in tnis day and age don't even bother. If children grew up from start with 'healthy' food (proper food) then maybe they would not turn their noses up at what schools serve. A previous response was about park-keepers etc., but it is all down to money, money, money .... It is NIOT money - it is merely politics. One patrty wont decrease tax, another will - but why Oh why wont somebody do the sensible thing and put UP tax to pay for these things so that we can get back to proper living. Money, money, money when its comes to education, police, health etc., We all moan about these things so we should pay ! with money NOT at a cost to our lives in every sense. |

My niece took her 11 month old baby to the clinic to be weighed last week. She was told baby was 1lb underweight, apparently she wasn't on the right line on the graph!! Niece was told to give her chips, fried rice and fried chicken, can you believe that. My niece doesn't eat fried chicken or chips herself and no way would she give it to her baby. When she goes to school she would probably be obese if she ate that lot. All this 'advise' from the health visitor. Sue |

I don't think that food is the only issue with the current obesity problem, children just don't get the opportunity to exercise anymore like they used to, yes, the lure of the computer is part of the reason, but also, I remember being able to go out in the morning on my bike and spend the day cycling round the park with my friends. There was a park keeper on duty and if there was any strange or loitering people, we would report to him and he would expel them from the park, also, they used to do regular security patrols there too. This kind of system is long gone. Councils just wouldn't commit the money to it these days. Maybe they should You just can't let your kids do that sort of thing nowadays which is a shame. Sometimes it is safer to have them where you can keep your eye on them. |
