Hi Everyone For all of those who are thinking of leaving for one reason or another. I ask you to have one more think about why it is you feel that you can no longer be a part of the site. Why do I ask you to think. Why because I have been there done that and I still love Genes for what it is. A community where I help others, A community where others help each other, A place where I can come and meet like minded people and share fun, laughter, tears and needs of others. Sure there has been some events that have been upsetting, there have been words between people and words and things that may or never will be forgotten. I have worn that t shirt to. I was a victim of that also a long time ago. Still am on occassions but do I let that interfere with the true reasons why I am here, No, Like you I love to be a part of a community of mostly decent people who I have known for some years whilst on Genes. I run a site and also belong to other sites but can I help those that do not belong to those sites, unfortunately not. This in itself is reason enough for me to want to be a part of this community and why I stay. You can easily do that to :) Colin :):)

Wendy Report 29 Dec 2006 14:06

I shall not be renewing my subscription in February as I have found a much better site than this one. Yes, I have had a lot of help from members here, but I am so fed up with a tree I cannot view properly and with a lot of my info lost!!! Good job I have a backup on my PC. I can get the same help, and more, at this new site and there is none of the bitching that has been abundant recently. Wendy

ButtercupFields Report 29 Dec 2006 14:09

Thank you for that Colin. It is exactly how I feel. In spite of everything that has happened in the past, there is still the core of really special people who always help out and rally round when needed. Personaly, I was very moved recently when so many people responded to a thread Em up about my being ill. When I first joined (many years ago) I was struck by the sheer friendliness of the members and the wide variety of threads posted. I do believe that this can still be the case, we just all need to put in more effort to keep it alive and well:-) BC XX

Colin The site's fine. A marvellous engine. The trouble is the low calibre of a very high percentage of subscribers who overwhelm it with rubbish, presumably just because they can.. If I can't join them, I shall leave them. len

I AM THINKING OF LEAVING, BECAUSE, I CANNOT USE MY TREE. I HAVE TRIED BUT THE SPACE THEY GIVE ME TO ENTER MY DATA IS JUST TOO SMALL AND DOESN'T SUIT MY PERSONAL NEEDS. I USE THE SITE FOR MY GENEALOGY THE FRIENDS I HAVE MADE IS A WONDERFUL BONUS. PIPS XX

I agree with you, BC.

Monty Smith strikes again - it's probably because of people like you, Monty, who make stupid remarks like that that people just can't be bothered any more

Linda

Linda Report 29 Dec 2006 14:21

I agree with everything you say Colin....as you know I too have been a victim, but that hasn't made me want to leave as I know there are lots of advantages to being a member of this site and I have made many contacts through genes. Anyone who chooses to leave because of bad feeling, of course that is their choice, but I say to them....Don't let 'them' win, stay and ignore the ones you don't like :)) Linda

Hi Everyone & Thank you for responding I will probably take the wrath of Genes now also for what I am about to say but at the end of the day I will always come down on the side of fairness for all. I agree that this site is and has been for some of the years I have been here not lived up to its full potetnial, that there is a non listening attitude by Genes themselves and that this issue is one of the major downfalls of the site itself. Trees do need to be sorted, better moderation needs to be in place and also the overall trust of the site returned. I do not think many would disagree with that. Colin

Colin, if only they would listen - it used to be great here, but sadly because of the way things are run they are great no more

JackyJ1593 Report 29 Dec 2006 14:30

Hi Colin, I too hope people reconsider and leave because the site does nothing for them in any way rather than because of arguments etc. As we both know, the bad feeling threads are not something new and have been around from a few weeks into the site but the storms usually pass and like you, people return because it can be good. There are problems with the site and I am sure the reason a lot of the other sites do not have some of these problems is because they have been started by current and ex members of GR who have learnt from the mistakes of this site. Len I do agree that the site does have a lot on here that may not be linked to genealogy, but I don't think it fair to call it rubbish. There are and always have been many threads on a variety of topics that may not be enjoyed by all but are enjoyed by many. I have been pleased in the last few weeks to see 'old' names returning and I would like to see more. I also hope that those who are here now will stay. Happy New Year, Jacky :-)

Hi Trish :):) I think Genes can be the site it once was again. Other sites manage it. Genes have just lost the member first approach that they had in those early days. Colin

Trish Report 29 Dec 2006 14:41

I won't be renewing Colin, although I'm paid up until August, there are some brilliant sites out there which are more user friendly (in more ways than one) than this one is. I could name two straight away .... but I won't :-))

Colin from Hampshire Report 29 Dec 2006 14:43

Hi Jacky :) You are so right in that storms have always been a part of GR although not on the scale of those seen. We have been members here for a long time and seen many of those storms pass us by and handled each situation has it happened. Back in the days when Genes could really be approached things were also sorted much quicker. Hopefully and I am forever hopeful that Genes will look in or be made aware of this thread and also have a re think of the way things are going and act accordingly on it. Colin

Hi Colin my membership is up for renewal in a couple of weeks and I shall be paying it. I have had some great info through this site and made some good friends. I recommend it to others because it is not fair not to give them the chance to see what it offers I have not had any negative vibes and usually miss any upset so I will carry on. Janet

JackyJ1593 Report 29 Dec 2006 14:48

I couldn't bring myself to leave as through the site I have been in touch with at least 7 second cousins that I never knew existed so I shall hang around just in case a few more are lurking out there to be met. Jacky :-))

I think, personally if GR had monitored the situation some months back and took those who were out to ruin this site to task (Gr were warned back in May) then the situation wouldnt have reached critical levels in September....leading to the wrong people getting suspended leaving those who instigated it all wringing their hands in glee and since then doing their utmost to spoil whats left of the general board. I'm sure the attacks will continue, until GR stop people rejoining gr under false names, and under different email addresses when they are banned or suspended from Gr....as proved very recently. Still Regardless of the muck ive had thrown at me recently im not going, they wont win, so they can stuff their necks in their ...lalalalala ......scarves ...and go take a long walk off a short pier Elaine x :o))
