Sorry I'm late again! Thanks for the reminder Ann. My suggestions are: The Five People You Meet In Heaven - Mitch Albom On his 83rd birthday, Eddie, a lonely war veteran, dies in a tragic accident trying to save a little girl from a falling cart. With his final breath, he feels two small hands in his - and then nothing. He awakens in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a lush Garden of Eden but a place where your earthly life is explained to you by five people who were in it. These people may have been loved ones or distant strangers. Yet each of them changed your path forever. The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho The story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who dreams of travelling the world in search of a treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the exotic markets of Tangiers and then into the Egyptian desert, where a fateful encounter with the alchemist awaits him. Emma - Jane Austen The happiest of love stories, the most fiendishly difficult of detective storoes and a matchless repository of English wit. Daisy |

OK Thanks Ann.... I will suggest: - Behind Closed Doors... by Jenny Tomlin.. Jenny grew up in a house where no one was safe. Born one of 5 children in the East end, her childhood was spent in squalor and terror. Violent beatings, humiliations and sexual abuse from her father were part of daily life. This is the story of how Jenny, her sister Kim and brother Laurence not only survived but ultimately transcended the unimaginable degradations heaped on them. With the power of love, cunning, the blackest of humour and an indestructible self belief, Jenny eventually broke free of her past. This is the life story of Martine McCutcheons Mum...... |

Hello All.. My suggestion is: - Snow Blind by P.J.Tracy... When the first snow falls in Minneapolis, the whole community takes part in a carnival of innocent fun. By noon, the park is full of snowmen.. But when the snow melts, it becomes graphically obvious the somebody's fun wasn't entirely innocent... Two bodies are found inside the snowmen, and a day later, rookie sheriff makes a similar discovery. Soon Detectives Gina and Magozzi are heading North in the midst of the worst blizzard seen in Minnesota for years to join the two investigations. But some things should remain buried. And as the cases unravel, it seems the snowmen weren't alone in hiding dark secrets. The old barn next to Sheriff Rikkers isolated farmhouse also appears to gave some strange connection to the killings..... I probably will only manage to do one book a month but, I look forward to doing that with you all in this group.. Thanks Maisie |

Synopsis for Sylvia - Bryce Courtney Sylvia is a story of the Children's Crusade, which occurred in the year 1212. It is perhaps the strangest true event to have taken place in European History. It is also a story of how, throughout some of the darkest medieval times, the redeeming power and strength of a young woman's love and intelligence pervail over poverty, brutality and bigotry. It was the blurb on the back cover that decided my buying of the book - 'I am Sylvia Honeyeater; I think myself born around 1196, and this is the story of my life. I am cursed by folk as an optimist and a dreamer which is a dangerous combination.....' Michelle |

Hi, i'm new to GRreaders . Below are my suggestions. The Journey by Josephine Cox The new bestseller from the country's number one storyteller is a deeply moving and powerful tale of love and courage and a sacrifice no man should be asked to make. Three strangers are thrown together by chance. It's an encounter which is destined to change all of their lives for ever. When Ben Morris comes to the aid of Lucy Baker and her daughter Mary, he is intrigued by the story behind their frequent visits to the local graveyard. Later, invited into their home, an old Edwardian place suffused with secrets of the past, Ben hears Lucy's remarkable tale - one she must tell before it's too late. The story of Barney Davidson, his family and the part Lucy played in his extraordinary life, is one of a deep, abiding love and an incredible sacrifice, spellbinding in its tragedy and passion. And it still exerts a powerful influence in the present day! The Journey is Josephine Cox at her mesmerising best. Spanning decades, generations and continents, it will stay with you for ever. My second ; You Stole My Heart Away Author: Joan Jonker Molly Bennett and Nellie McDonough are very happy with their lot in life. The two best mates love a bit of excitement. So when they learn there is a wedding in the offing, which will bring the Bennett, McDonough and Corkhill families closer, it gives the pair a good reason to save up for a visit into Liverpool and to the shop selling wedding hats For my classic , Three Men in a Boat To Say Nothing of the Dog Author: Jerome K. Jerome This comic novel describes the boating expedition on the Thames of three friends and their dog, Montmerency. The difficulties and vicissitudes of these innocents abroad are magnified to epic proportions, and give the book an air of fresh innocence. I'll be totally honest found it on a book site but it looks good. ( I learnt a new word today as well , lol , Vicissitude - one of ups and downs of life .) Tina |

Hi - new member so I'll just make 1 suggestion this month! On the thread the other day about reading someone mentioned Torey Hayden so how about One Child - Torey Hayden 'She was a wild, violent 6 year old, lost in a world of anger and torment - until a brilliant young teacher reached out. ..This is the remarkable story of their journey together - an odyssey of hope, courage, and inspiring devotion that opened the heart and mind of one lost child to a new world of discovery and joy'. Oh someone has put forward a book I actually have sitting here to read - Constance Briscoe's Ugly My other suggestions would be Sylvia by Bruce Courtney Classic: Mansfield Park by Jane Austin. My biggest problem is I live in very rural town and the library is very small and it seems everything I want has to come through the district/national interloan service and it takes six weeks or more for the books to arrive sometimes, otherwise I would join in with your greaders group - Michelle |

Sorry, can't always get on here when kids are off school ! The Prestige by Christopher Priest Two 19th century stage illusionists, the aristocratic Rupert Angier and the working-class Alfred Borden, engage in a bitter and deadly feud; the effects are still being felt by their respective families a hundred years later. Working in the gaslight-and-velvet world of Victorian music halls, both men prowl edgily in the background of each other's shadowy life, driven to the extremes by a deadly combination of obsessive secrecy and insatiable curiosity. At the heart of the row is an amazing illusion they both perform during their stage acts. The secret of the magic is simple, and the reader is in on it almost from the start, but to the antagonists the real mystery lies deeper. Both have something more to hide than the mere workings of a trick. The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman A gripping mystery from an incedibly talented author. Sally Lockhart is living quietly in London with her obnoxious cousin, after her father's tragic death at sea. But the peaceful, if hateful, existence is about to end. Sally's father left her a message, and deciphering it will lead her into a world of danger and excitement such as she's never known.... Classic Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck A parable of commitment, loneliness, hope and loss, OF MICE AND MEN is a powerful and moving portrayal of two men striving to understand their own unique place in the world. Drifters in search of work, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie have nothing in the world except each other - and a dream. A dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie - struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy - becomes a victim of his own strength. Tackling universal themes, friendship and a shared vision, and giving a voice to America's lonely and dispossessed, OF MICE AND MEN remains Steinbeck's most popular work. Maz. XX |
