A couple in Wales are to be investigated by their local council for smoking in their own home. Apparently their neighbours have complained about the smell. The world has gone mad! Jeanette x

Probe into couple smoking at home Jeanette Gordon-Crawley defends her right to smoke at home A council has confirmed it is investigating a complaint from a neighbour about a couple smoking in their own home. A woman, who has not been named, has written to the council saying cigarette smoke from next door was 'permeating into her living room'. Gwynedd Council's public protection service has said it has a duty to investigate. Gavin Gordon-Crawley, the subject of the complaint, called it 'a joke'. Mr Gordon-Crawley, 51, who smokes 20 cigarettes a day and whose wife is a social smoker, told The Sun newspaper: 'I can understand smoking bans in certain places - even a total public smoking ban. 'But being told I can't smoke in my own home. It must be some sort of joke.' The complainant says smoke is 'permeating into her living room' Jeanette Gordon-Crawley, 54, who lives in a semi-detached house, added: 'We can't see how smoke from our house could possibly get into the house next door. 'People have a right to complain if you smoke near them, but we have the right to the occasional cig in our own home.' A spokesperson for Gwynedd Council said it had a 'statutory responsibility' to investigate the neighbour's complaint. 'The person complaining alleges that smoke from a neighbouring property is able to enter their property. 'What people do within their own homes is of no concern to us, as long as they do not affect other people,' the spokesperson added. 'In this instance, we have received a complaint stating that smoking in a house in the Caernarfon area is causing a nuisance to the neighbours and as a local authority we have a statutory responsibility to investigate this complaint.

Just a thought........smoking what? If it is tobacco, then that is stupid, but what if the real complaint is about something else? *update* scrap that, jsut seen the report above.

TW....how am I? Gasping for a fag! LOL Thanks for that Pink. I would have thought the complainant should investigate her own property to start with to see how it could be getting into her house

As it is a semi maybe there is a gap somewhere between the houses, a loose airbrick or something. i would have thought the complainant would be better getting a builder to investigate, as I would if somebody's smoke permeated into my home. Maybe she complained because the houses are council property. Ann Glos

We had neighbours who smoked a lot and yes the smell of smoke does permeate through. It seemed to get through the loft area because it was always strongest in the bedrooms. Not very pleasant for those who don't smoke!!! Thankfully they have now moved. Wendy

Ex-neighbour owned cats which forever used our garden as a toilet - could I have complained? Present neighbour has a baby which naturally cries - should I complain? Future neighbours might be into garlic - could I complain? This is absolutely ridiculous, bet she's hoping for a house move from the council or money!!!!!!!

Should I complain about the two farmers who spread slurry on the fields?? Now if she had that smell getting in whenever she opened her door, I would have a bit more sympathy with her. I have sooty smuts all over my car and front door every day from the coal fires of my neighbours. Should I expect them to freeze to death instead? Jay

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 9 Jan 2007 16:41

Not only unpleasant but passive smoking is said to be as dangerous to the health if not more dangerous than smoking. however, they would be better employed trying to find out and cure where the smoke is getting in. The council probably can't do anything unless it is their property. Ann Glos

As a non smoker I find this ridiculous and very hard to believe,we are living in a very silly time im afraid!lol People are so convinced their going to get ill from being 200 yards near a smoker, dont they understand what were breathing on our streets, car fumes and all the other rubbish they pump into our air! Im afraid the government are brainwashing people to the extent that people are more concerned with passive smoking(cigarettes) than the polutants they use daily. the only passive smoking Im concerned about is the awful stinky and extremely carconogenic fumes coming from others exhausts! If you really do your research there is no conclusive evidence to say that second hand cigarrette smoke can cause you any undue harm.

BobClayton Report 9 Jan 2007 16:53

They are not saying people can't smoke in their own homes. The smoke should not be getting next door, if it is then it is also a pathway to other things like CO. This could and has killed. You have as much right to complain about tobacco smells as any other smell or nuisance ( noise etc ) Bob
