Hi everyone just received this from my Coz Radio 2 talked about the proposed Road Pricing car tax scheme on the radio. Apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to the 'Pay as you go' road tax.The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tellanybody about it. Therefore at the time of the comments only 250,000 people have signed it so far and 750,000 signatures are required to stop them introducing it.Once you've given your details (you don't have to give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they will send you an email with a link in it. Once you click on that link, you'll have signed the petition. The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you Having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working mother who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill. If you care about our freedom and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible. http://petitions*pm.gov*uk/traveltax/ replace* with a dot Thought you might be interested Pat

Hey Patricia don't feel to bad about it. There is another thread after yours about the same thing and most people adding to it don't appear to know the petition is for real. Linda

In our state of 'democracy' petitions, demonstrations and 'consultations' are routinely ignored because the Man from the Ministry knows best. There is nothing magic about 750,000 as far as I am aware. However, with the rate at which signatures are being added there is a good chance that the total will reach one million, which should make them sit up and take notice. If this road pricing goes ahead it will simply price a lot of people out of jobs, especially shift workers such as public transport workers, teachers, police, paramedics and nurses who have no say in when they travel, as well as anyone without a direct public transport route between home and work. If your child fall ill and you have to take them to A & E during the rush hour that will cost you £1 a mile or more. On a trial, a full-time mum doing a school run ran up a bill of £80+ per month. Where is she supposed to get the money from? The potential for economic damage is enormous.

I agree Brian it we will soon be living like our Ancestors who couldn't afford to travel. Families will have to live in the same town or not see each other. It just seems another scam to get yet more money from us. Pat stepping off my soap box

It stinks We have two cars ( no we aren't greedy, just needy ) One is a my company car that I do roughly over 100 miles each day - will I have have to pay or my company, If I have to it won't be worth me doing the job The other is my Dad's mobility car that is used to run him to regular hospital / doctors appt's - that alone will cost an arm and a leg. I want to work and care for my father but it is going to be expensive to carry on doing so Just another tax to rob us!!!

From silicon.com Anti-road-charge petition hits 750,000 signatures But will the PM listen? By Gemma Simpson An online petition against the proposed 'pay-as-you-drive' road charge has accumulated 750,000 signatures, suggesting significant dislike of the scheme among UK citizens. The e-petition, hosted on the 10 Downing Street website, is due to close on 20 February 2007 and bloggers had been speculating that 750,000 signatures would be required to stop the government from introducing the road-charging scheme. However the Prime Minister's official spokesman said in a statement he was not aware of any threshold of signatures that would change government policy

I wonder how many signatures will it take before the government abandons this idea. They seem to want to go ahead with this scheme despite the opposition. I wonder if they have forgotten that they are here to represent us.
