that's great news Dawnie :-)) yes mine are on half term this week well, we DID go and we DID get soaked! kids lost interest quite quickly - especially Jamie - but I did get 2 big sackfuls of brambles cut down. it'll be slow going, but we will get there! only trouble was that it was completely waterlogged - we were actually sinking in lol hopefully we will have a few dry days this week so I can get down there when they go back to school and really get going with the clearance Maz. Cant believe the price either last year they charged £8 blimey if I save on veg bill will be worth every penny and will keeep hubby happy and exercised. Good thing is our garage is right by it so all equiment can be kept in there. |

thanks everyone for your replies - and Fred for your offer of help! we went up and had a look today. Am really quite pleased :-) it's actually a half size plot (5 rods apparently lol) which suits me as I was worried about coping with a biggun two thirds of it has sort of weedy growth to ankle height and the other bit has brambles - quite high, but cut-down-able. there is some sort of wooden frame thing under the brambles and a compost bin. also 2 apple trees. may find some more treasures under the brambles! saw plenty of others that were much more overgrown, so we are happy with that. we are gonna go up there tomorrow and make a start - so won't be able to move on tuesday lol Maz. Hi Maz ,i reckon you will have plenty of fun in your [patch],i know i did ,along with a lot of hard work.Suzi will need to find out where she intends planting the brassica ,and treating that area with garden lime to prevent the nasties, but don't put lime where you are going to put potatoes.Plant all the crops but carrot and parsnip in vending cups first ,then use a bulb planter to make the holes for transplanting ,your plants ,then are at their growing distance to start with and don't need thinning.any help i can give ,i will be glad to help.. If the society have one available ,use a rotovater the first time round to make things quicker ,leaving you more time to plan. any help i can give you are welcome to.Fred. |

I am going to make a lot of you green with envy. We have an acre of land on which we built our house some years ago. OH has made several vege gardens in different parts of the land. Unfortunately since we had dog and cat put down last year (old and not so well) we have had a plague of rabbits, among other things. OH has spent a fortune on wire netting to try to keep them away from his veges. Hasnt been a good growing season lately. Most summers for several years I was kept busy freezing beans. And beetroot. Cant beat homegrown veges. Lots of courgettes this year plus big cabbages, also had a lot of broccoli. At present we have sweet corn ripe. Any emigrants coming to help? |

We had an allotment in Cardiff for about a year before we moved to Sydney.....had a shed and everything and I loved it. Gots lots of great veggies, (I remember having millions of lettuces and giving them to everyone up the road)! Weeds are a pain in the a___e though! Think it was something like 12 pound a year - fantastic value but then we emigrated. Good luck and have fun, and I hope you have a shed as well! Sal in Sydneyxxx |

lol Diana - I always think of EastEnders when we are there pmsl sheds are surprisingly expensive, so unless there is one there (unlikely) I won't be getting one yet. I know what will be on my Xmas list tho!! Maz. XX |
