there was a thread on here once before that stated people from other countries working over here or even not working over here can claim for their families left behind because they still have to support them. No wonder our country is in such a state. |

Apparently the 12 hours have to be college/school based learning, and as my son only did 8 hours college based learning child support was stopped, even though he was classed as a full time student by the college and was entitled to a student union card, student discount card for local shops and facilities. If any one can work out the governments thinking on this lot then let my know, cos all i know is i,m still supporting him full time and getting jack all help in doing so, even though i'm on a very low income. |

I think it should be paid depending on income. A couple that live up the road from me, live in a 1.5 million house and are just about to buy a 2.5 million house. They want for nothing, the child has every possible gadget and toy out there. They have a cleaner even though she does not work (doesn't need too). The child benefit is pocket change to them. I do not begrudge them anything they have incase anyone thinks that. I do however think that the child benefit they recieve could go to a more useful cause. Yes they pay more tax than me, but I don't have children so why is my tax paying towards theirs and others children? if thats the argument?? |

What bugs me is my eldest was on an apprentiship, got £2.50 per hour(minimum wage rules don't apply to apprentiships),his child benefit was stopped because although he was a full time student, he only spent 1 day a week at college, the other 4 1/2 days a week were work based learning days. Now his apprentiship has been terminated, he's on a full time college course(2 1/2 days a week), i'm told i can now reapply for his child benefit though!!!! Very Confused Izzy. |

Child Benefit was the original Tax Credit - everyone gets it and those who don't need it pay it back in their taxes. It is the same with personal allowances - every one gets them. OC |

Ah yes, but those earning huge salaries also pay huge amounts of tax, so why shouldn't they get something back for their trouble? |

I've no problem with those on low incomes receiving child benefit but I do think it should be means tested. It doesn't seem right that couples earning huge salaries should receive state assistance. |

Unfortunately child benefit is essential to some families on a low income, raising a child or children is an expensive business. I'm not just talking about getting what they want, I mean getting what they need! Think I'll come and live where you are Theresa....what do I do to qualify for your pay outs, must I be resident for a minimum term, hmm, maybe I'll have another child....or two, triplets or quads!!? lol Nanna-Moo ;-)) |

I just checked out who is entitled to claim this and it seems that all EU countries can! No wonder people flood the country - so do I feel guilty taking the child benefit? you can bet your bottom dollar I dont feel any guilt at all. Debs x (In shock) |

Talking about Child Benefit and Tax credits etc... A Polish guy where OH works here in UK has claimed Benefits for his children living in Poland..... and has been awarded them!!! Whilst OH's British 75 year old colleague is still having to work because he doesn't have enough contributions to retire after 42 years working in this country! What is this country coming to? I split what I get each month between the two kids............ oldest just dips into her's when she wants stuff that we say she doesn't need - lol and the youngest hasn't touched his yet and so at nearly 12 he has a nice nest egg building up! I'll give him two more years and he will have raided it. |
