pmsl at the fried banana description

I love bananas so long as they are ripe, can't bear green unripe ones, they taste sort of woody!

I can remember my mum listening to something on the radio about fried bananas so I came home from school to a plate of sausage, bacon, egg tomatoes and what looked like a big fried poo-----------went back to school hungry, feeling sick and with the sound of mums laughter in my ears

Yes, Easter Bunny, they set great store by going to the loo every day.....maybe all their tight corsets and stodgy diets bunged them up.....no idea....

Oh yes, I remember the Virol, that was the treat on a Friday night.....teaspoon of syrup of figs, one of cold liver oil and then the Virol.....it was supposed to build you up and the syrup of figs was an 'opening medicine' as my Dad would call it....my English Gran was an old Victorian and life seemed to centre of order, correctness, discipline and.....bowel movements....lol

Grandad was stationed in Northern Ireland when Dad was born and they regularly ate kelp and other seaweeds and loved it.....also good at 'making you go'......Dad loved his tripe and onions, chitterlings, pigs trotters, all offal, tongue etc. ox tails....he would take us on treks picking berries and nuts, mushrooms etc. had his own allotment where we ate fresh veg.....until his end, the only medicine Dad took was a prescribed tablet for a hiatus hernia (sp)...

I cannot bear to eat any of the stuff my Dad loved, tried it and I didn't like it......but in those days it was a treat.....

Just seen the cabbage water one, and yes, I still drain the cabbage and sometimes drink the water....and I loved bread and dripping....

Not too many gruesome dishes anyway. My little grandaughter is a fussy eater.she'll say 'what's that grandma?' and I tell her and she'll say,'ooh I love that then when she has a bite its' I not like it'.Mind you she can always manage to find room for sweets. She is 3 on wednesday and cant wait for her party. back to food, I knew someone who used to add 2 spoonfuls of curry powder to her spag bol.Her husband was from India and he made fantastic curries.my mouth is watering at the memories.Oh,I was given virol too, loved it. I used to sneak away with the jar if I got the chance.once nicked my baby brothers nurse harveys gripe water and hid under the table and swigged the lot,Paula

I remember being dosed with Virol cos I was a weedy little thing in those days. I think my body must have stored it all up for now, cos I am much heftier now lol My Mum was quite a good cook so altho we never had lots of money we were always pretty well fed, even if on breast of lamb, pigeon pie, and rabbit stew (went off that after my pet rabbit disappeared)

My Gran was an excellent cook, but never wasted a thing. We had been staying with her for a fortnight and were leaving early one morning to go home. We got up at 6 am and were faced with a breakfast of chopped lettuce and cold left over sausages - the lettuce dressed in the Yorkshire way with sugar and vinegar! With trifle to follow. OC
