ta for all the messages about ears .It gave me a good laugh anyway.I've just been chatting to someone about what big families my ancestors had and she told me her dad in law was one of 13 and his mum only let them sit at the table if theywere earning otherwise they had to stand as not enough chairs.This prompted us to talk about strange meals,usually concocted out of need rather than preference. Anyone like to share their own experiences.My mam was once offered a pie that just had cabbage leaves in it. |

Hi Paula,, Yes took to tea at an old flames elderly aunts,,,asked would youl like Pork Pie,,,yes please I said mouth watering,,,,,,,,,turned out to be home made tart thing but was made of Sausage Meat,!!!,,,,,,,cold,,,,needless to say I had to sit and eat it,,,,I never said yes to anything again unless I saw it first,,,,,,,,,,!! |

Not necessarily weird...but, As a child we visited the elderly Godmother.... Three of us aged 7,6 and 5 ' Would you like some chocolate?' she said. Our eyes lit up as she disappeared into the kitchen ..............only to return with Soup bowls full of hot chocolate, gone cold! Yuk!!! My sister and I had to bribe our brother (5) to drink it. This always sticks in my mind and reminds me not to be greedy. Tina x |

I am frowned at everyday by my work collegues for having ketchup on my salad... Yep, disgusting! BUT..It workes for me , I have lost 2 and 1/2 stone since September. Tina x ps, not a bad as brown sauce and porridge LOL |

'Home made Apple Pie, anyone?' said my friend's elderly, nearly blind mother. She was famous for her apple pies. Greedy guts here had a huge slice, with custard. Errrrrrr- she had made it with frozen thick pea soup!!! OC |

Once on a trip with the 2 young children we saw a sign 'hot pies'. As it was lunch time decided to buy them for lunch. The man put them in what I presume was a microwave, might just have been a warming oven (it was about 42 yrs ago). The parcel felt warm. We drove a few more miles before we stopped to eat them. They had ice in the middle - well the meat filling was still frozen, anyway. OH and kids didnt eat theirs. Cant say I enjoyed mine either. |

Hi Paula, my parents ate: - brains, chitterlings, tripe, tongue, pigs feet, rabbit, & conger eel Never made to eat them, although I loved chitterlings & pigs feet couldn't tackle the rest and I don't think I could eat chitterlings & pigs feet now. The only thing I was made to eat was cornflake tart at school. I didn;t want it but was given it by the dinner lady. Teacher on duty made me eat it and I was sick for the rest of the day. It makes me feel sick now to think about it. Love Bakewell Pudding mmmmmmmm Ria xxxxx |

Just watched 'Cooking in the danger zone' on BBC2 ,documentry about foods from India and China The lowest caste in India worked in the fields 10 hours a day,7 days a week collecting rice, and were given rice as payment to feed the family. In the months there was no rice harvest they made patties out of buffalo dung to cook in the sun and eat to live! first time i've heard of that happening. Others caught rats from the ground to roast, chap on documentry sampled some and said it was good and tasted like roast chicken. Which proves if you were really hungry you would eat anything just to stay alive. Food for thought? Mau :O |

I had a spoonful of malt extract every day as a child - it was called Virol. - looking at the name now, it sounds rather disgusting!! Also had toast and beef dripping (the brown jelly from the bottom of the bowl - delicious!!! Whenever my sister & I visited my gran during the latter part of her life (she died aged 99 in 2003) we used to take her out, as she always offered us cakes complete with 'penicillin' lol Her constitution may have been able to take it, but we didn't want to risk it. Another thing gran gave me when I was a child put me off mushrooms for a long time was sweetbreads!! They were disgusting, I thought they were mushrooms in a sauce - they were, in reality bullocks b*llocks!! When I lived in the Shetland isles, my 'perpetual Lamb Stew' had run out and I couldn't be bothered to go into town - 2 busese a week, but a 3 mile walk to the bus stop, so I ate seaweed & mussels that I picked from the shore at the end of the garden. My Gran was an excellent cook, but never wasted a thing. We had been staying with her for a fortnight and were leaving early one morning to go home. We got up at 6 am and were faced with a breakfast of chopped lettuce and cold left over sausages - the lettuce dressed in the Yorkshire way with sugar and vinegar! With trifle to follow. OC |
