I am sorry this happened to you and your boss Margot but I think your boss was very silly not to put a lock on that cupboard from the word go, she must be naive to think things like handbags were safe in a place so open to the public. Maybe you had been watched and they saw one of you going to your bag for something or saw you put them in there.

However I am glad you have the house keys and car keys back and hope you don't get any further repercussions from the thieves having had access to your things. I don't think you or your boss would be covered by her insurance as the cupboard wasn't secured by a lock.

I would go mad if I lost or was relieved of my handbag, it has so much more than just the usual stuff in, there are diaries and other paperwork that I like to have to hand as well as my spare specs or sometimes my prescription sunglasses and all sorts of things. My o.h. always says I need a filing cabinet for a handbag lol

Glad you didn't get too upset tho, best to stay calm if you can and deal with everything.

Would the thieves be on cctv in the store or nearby so they can be looked at by Police and maybe even recognised as regular offenders?

I had my wallet stolen from my office many years ago, the office was in a multiple-tenanted building so we could not monitor who came in. It was found a couple of months later in a nearby garden with the small amount of cash missing but cards and driving licence still there.
One of my colleagues had her hadbag stolen when we were sitting in a pub in London. She had put it on the floor by her feet and someone walked past and hooked the strap of it with their foot.
She didn't notice but if she had then the thief would have just apologised for accidentally catching it!

That's the way the thieves do it in pubs and coffee shops, Brian, they sort of move the back nearer to them with their foot and then pick it up and disappear while the owner is still chatting or ordering drinks, whatever. It was shown on a programme about pickpockets etc on tv, great to give the idea to others I thought.


I also see women leave their handbags in their shopping trolley and move off to get stuff from shelves. It only takes a moment for some lowlife to grab it and disappear out of the store.
