OneFootInTheGrave Report 6 Dec 2013 07:41

If this was the reason that former soldier Stephen Taylor aged 60 had his benefits cut then The Department of Works & Pensions should be hanging their heads in shame :-|

An Army veteran has had his benefits slashed after he told Jobcentre staff that he had volunteered to sell poppies in honour of his former comrades.

Stephen Taylor, 60, was receiving £71.20 a week in Jobseeker's Allowance while searching for work after losing a previous job as a pub manager.

However, when he said he had been raising money for the Royal British Legion, they told him he was not doing enough to find a new job and withdrew the payment.

Staffs Col Report 6 Dec 2013 07:44

I've read this story on an armed forces veteran's site and it baffles me for the simple reason when I was out of work a couple of years ago Jobcentre Plus actively encouraged me to do several hours voluntary work a week (providing I still looked for work). Therefore I wonder if there is more to this story than is reported, if not then he should appeal :-S

Some Newspapers use any news that drowns out the endless guffaws booming daily from the Commons.

Meanwhile, the public should stand up to this inhuman treatment of defenceless citizens who are supposed to be treated equally.

The majority of staff at Job Centre Plus sites do not want to be there and really don't give two hoots about their clients. The morale within the DWP is so low that most employees do little to help genuine cases. They don't have the resources. Those out of work are jolly lucky if they have an advisor who actually gives a damn.

They are unable to apply discretion, they tow the line and answer to their managers who have even less appreciation of people in dire straights than the counter staff do.

The out of work who play the system do very well thank you! The honest claimants are disadvantaged simply because they are truthful.

I'm sure we could form a committee made up of 12 members of GR who could put the system back to the once functioning entity it was.

I'd have to be the chairperson of course :-D
