Soup Pie

I have taken to making a pot of vegetable soup at the beginning of the week.

Fred goes off out eating and buying chips three days a week so it keeps OH and me pretty much fed for a lot of the week.

There was a bit left over last week and this week, by way of a change, I made a curry with Quorn and veg and a Korma sauce from a jar. It was mild so it became a stew with dumplings on it's second incarnation . Tonight, for it's third appearance, it had the left- over rice and a bit of mango chutney that was lingering, along with a bit of curry powder mixed in and becamea sort of soupy thing. Mulligatawny for the presumtuous.

This just leaves that bit of left- over soup from last week . Two more onions, a couple of more mushrooms and some Marmite saw it go between two crusts and become a pie for tomorrow.

If only a lot of people ate healthily like that Sharron....they would manage their finances much better.
Im with you all the way!!! :-)

It's not everybody who wants to live on left- overs.

I am finding things a bit tighter than usual at the moment. Can't imagine how it must be for people whose life is not devoted to pugging away every halfpenny they can get hold of. You know, people who have a life!

I've been there Sharron - I once had one egg and a bit of bread for the weekend and I had to choose the moment when to eat them.

I seem to recall that you and your OH ate pretty well when you popped in here for a cup of tea!

Sharron...you say not everyone wants to live on leftovers, but from what I read of your diet ,it is much more healthy than a lot of people on low incomes live these days from what we hear.
They seem to think that pizzas and fast food are a way of economising.
A big pan of soup or stew is delicious and a lot more nutritious than some of the easy heat stuff available ...it just takes time to prepare...
I know which I prefer...of course I was brought up during the war when we had to make use of everything, and I still hate waste!
I would eat at your house any day!! :-)

Although I could be considered as part of the post baby-boom generation, we were discussing this at home the other day. We picked up the habit from our mothers who were recycling left-overs until they were too old to care for themselves.

When I first read your post last night, the thought that Sharron had reinvented Potage came to mind - a pot on the fire, with all sorts of things added to it during the week, a bit like the 'bottomless' cups of tea/coffee some cafes offer ;-)

There just seems to be something very right about sitting at the kitchen table whittling away at a carrot.

It's a bit like getting in touch with the past.

We did the bag of apples as well. Big pie and big crumble for us and smaller versions of each for the two orflings. Fred's mate and our other friend who we exploit tirelessly. They each looked after his mum and neither can cook very well but they have their uses, tee-hee.

The garden gets tended, Fred gets accompanied and things are repaired while we churn out endless left-overs.

Thanks for today's smile injection Sharron. I would not call your meals "left-overs"at all, just very inventive way of using up good food.Too much is thrown away as it is.Did you make an apple pie?I can make a decent rhubarb & apple crumble, but have never been able to master an apple pie.My mother used to make the most mouth-watering pies....have not found anything to beat those yet.Trouble is, she would never let me watch her whilst she was cooking, so don't know how to make decent pie dough, mine used to turn out like carboard, so I gave up trying.

As you know, I am a chucker and dolloper. I put a lump of Crisp and Dry or Trex and a dollop of Stork or some cheaper baking fat if I can get it, in the food processor with a bit of salt and give it a bit of a whizz. When it looks a bit crumby I pour the water in until it looks about right in a lump.

I usually let it relax ( I have a skive ) but OH doesn't bother, he just gets on with constructing the pie because he makes a dainty pie and mine looks like it fell out of an aircraft or a cows bum.

I just put raw apple and some Aldi's Spenda in the pie.

Lol Sharron. I have tried using frozen short crust, but it still doesn't work.It is ME that is at fault. What is a "skive" and Aldi's "Spenda"?

Sharron

Sharron Report 6 Dec 2013 12:46

A skive is a bit of a laze about, Splenda is a sucrose based sweetener that is very overpriced but Aldi do the same but much, much cheaper.

I don't pretend that my apple pie tastes any good and I always serve it with a large portion of that or go without.

OH just been in and consulted me as to whether I was up for bubble and squeak with the last of the beef roast. He apologised saying it was not a proper dinner. Informed him that it was better in our tummies than the bin.

Leftovers are tasty - am having leftover homemade carrot and corriander soup from yesterday for lunch with a nice crusty roll.

"Skivving" off...........

in the military...........
is the skill ..................... managing to find something else to do, rather than get on with the job in hand, while your mates' or others do the work......then return when all is done!!

Oh, I see, so skive is 'skiving off'? Have heard of that, but not Splenda.I wonder if that is the same as Stevia? One of my daughters gave me 5 large pots of this, (she has a pass for a wholesale place, had to buy this Stevia in bulk) it is ultra sweet. She also has a Stevia plant. When I was up in her house recently, she popped a leaf of this in my mouth.Yuk, it is soooo sweet, like eating about 6-7 sweeteners in one go.
It has been years since I tastedbubble & squeak.Very nice!

We had it for tea.I told Fred it would be left-over pie and he ate it.

He can cope with left-overs as long as it means there is enough money for his social life and drinking!
