Wow Glasgow lass and i thought my teenage daughter was a hoarder!!

Can you give any away as presents. Some shops offer the chance for people to donate a gift. cant remember which charity organsises this but certain shops, superdrug was one i'm sure.

Or is there a xmas fair being held near you? you could rent a table and the proceeds donate to a worthy cause perhaps.Im also sure a children's home would be delighted to receive some of the items.

I worked for a well known children's charity in one of their shops and was amazed at the amount of items that were thrown in the bin if they didn't sell within 2 weeks . Clothes were send to other stores but books and bric a brac were just binned.
We weren't allowed to buy anything unless it had been put out for sale first.

I now volunteer at a local hospice shop and can honestly say that nothing gets binned unless broken and clothes that are not fit to sell go for rags which we get money for.
Most charity shops are staffed by volunteers and they pay for what they have the same as customers.

If you know for sure that someone in a shop is taking donations then you should make it known to the manager or higher .

Well done, hope that means they get a lot of contributions.

Ladies The Salvation Army will take stuff and now "we" recieve anything they cant use to pass on to homeless people or those who really cant afford to buy clothes ...

"we" would rather not say which charity as I,ve had both good and bad feed back about why I do it sorry

well I wrote a letter to our local newspaper - South Wales Echo - suggesting people consider donating clotjhng to the Huggard Centre and am pleased to say it is printed in this evening's edition :-D

Any ideas on what to do with most of this?

My OH can fit an absurd amount of "stuff" into a single closet/cupboard.
Once anything goes in, it's unlikely that it will ever be seen again.
We are having a new kitchen fitted at the beginning of the year and need extra storage for about 2 weeks during the refit

I rang our Homeless Centre years ago - I had a pile of gents underpants - outgrown and was reluctant to bin them. I rang and asked saying they are in good condition, washed and ironed - not only did the gentleman say yes but asked any chance of ladies underwear - even bras!

Each Christmas they appeal for socks/toiletries for both sexes etc. They also took pillows, duvets and bedlinen, blankets

I bagged and sorted lot of my late fathers clothes. I rang the local homeless hostel.
a bin bag full of large mens fleeces/jumpers
2 bin bags full of shirts
8 coats of varying descriptions
Carrier bag of pants and socks which were new, or as new.

They didn't want them - they were not NEW. They didn't like giving the people second hand things apparently.

I know every time the homeless are mentioned on GR I harp on and I probably always will :-D

Please don't forget for ladies, men, boys and girls underwear, toiletries including tooth brushes/paste, disinfectants, toilet rolls, kitchen rolls etc some charities even welcome washing powders.

Right Florence I dropped a load of bags off to Marie Curie, gruff lady said put them there, I saw out back man with a van sorting through and taking away.

I bet most of them have an interesting story to tell - all someone's son or daughter

when i was coming home from the London meet
earlier this year on the over night bus
with Stray and baby Satan
a homeless person sat next to me
and i must admit he smelt a dam sight better
than the foreign woman who sat there first
he talked about his life story all the way home 6 hours
and i must admit he was a decent person
very interesting life he had had on the street s
he had relationship problems that made him run away 3 years before
but that night he was coming back to Southbank Middlesbrough
for the second time for a visit to his mum

That's very kind of you Ann. have to say once dropped a load of clothes of at save the children shop. I had washed and sorted all the baby clothes into age order and put them into large freezer bags and labelled them. The assistant said"Shouldn't have bothered we will resort it anyway, just leave it over there". No word of thanks at all, hence that was the last time i took anything there. Some charity shops i'm sure let the staff have first pick of what comes in and then put out the rest.

if i had a local shelter for the homeless, i certainly would give direct. At least you know it will be appreciated.

Also some of the prices these shops charge for goods are far too expensive. i once bought a check shirt for my sons school xmas play in woolies for £3.00. The same shirt was on sale in a charity shop for £5.00!!

Hats off to everyone that tries to make a difference. It's good to give.
