Its always worth searching the internet for parish records where the event took place. As Rose says, the baptism record might give the date of birth but only the mother's Christian name, not her maiden name (unless it was an illegitimate birth to an unmarried mother).

From sometime in the 1960's, the dob was included in the GRO death index - as provided by the informant who might have got it wrong!

Certificates can be ordered at a cost of £9.25 (England and Wales) from

No you can only get the actual birth dates from the certs.

Bear in mind too in the qtr a birth was reg not the date they were born . you have 6 weeks to register a birth

For instance ,my dad was born late dec 1907. his mum registered his birth late Jan 1908 so he shows in the March qtr 1908. His birth cert show his birth date on it ,as they all will

this will probably apply to any birth that was at the late part of the end of any qtr . they will probably show in the next quarter on the GRO record

Hi Kenneth,

No actual date are shown on entries, what you see are only entries of that registered birth.

To get all the full details from that entry you have to apply and buy the certificate,

Hi, you can't see actual birth certs online, so it can be difficult if there are several in the same area and time frame.

There are parish records online (eg London records on Ancestry) which give baptisms, on some of these the actual birth date is also listed so that can be a great help.
