Karen in the desert Report 20 Nov 2013 22:28

Hello there, and welcome back to GR,
I'm not on here half as much as I used to be...no time...:-) I am a student once again, although, according to my student nephew I don't do it right, ie I don't stay in bed til 2pm, eat pot noodle or down a dozen snake-bites in the pub every night.
No I do not....because I actually study, send in my assignments on time, worry if I haven't read the right book yet, and hope I'm doing ok . :-D :-D :-D

Firstly .. I am really sorry I have not come back to this thread earlier , life is pretty manic now and my to-do list gets longer all the time .
So Hello and thanks to everyone who has replied , it's nice to hear from you all . I have missed being a small part of GR
Diz my little mate .. my phone crashed a few months ago and I lost all my contacts , that with other things going on at the time meant we lost touch.
I am so sorry about this and a HUGE THANK YOU for the beautiful bouquet of flowers you and Stu brought round earlier this year.
Sorry I was in such a state that day XXXX
I do tend to go days without looking at GR or TBH other sites I belong to now as I just don't get the time . But it is really nice now and again to be able to sit down for a few hours with a 'Tankard ' of wine and catch up..
It,s great to know you are all still here <3

i dont think the RR has had a bad effect on the boards, i think its a good idea,

i think people have got bored, n spend more time on other sites,

the fights are no were near as good as they were years ago, quiet frankly there boring now, :-\

and the same old same old, people moaning they have been RR if GR didnt think it warranted deleting they would reinstate it, then when they dont people put up similiar material knowing it will get the same reaction, then we get thread after thread, of woee is me, my post has gone, and so has my new one, boringggggg!

Hi Kim
I am still around but don't spend quite as long on here these days. The RR button has had a detrimental effect on the boards, not so much the button but the way Admin react to it. (Gut reaction, delete thread) so even if there is nothing wrong the person who presses the button always wins so it is frustrating.

Thought of you a couple of weeks back as we hurtled down that horrid road past the turning to where you are.

Hi Newby and welcome back!

Years ago, when it was a lot busier, someone compared GR to a pub. There had been some ferocious arguments and complaints about cliques etc.

It was said that when people went into a pub they tended to hang out with people they had something in common with. That didn't mean there was anything wrong with the other people in the pub, just that they stayed with people they felt comfortable with. Of course there were people who disliked others or disliked their opinions and beliefs but that's the same in any social situation. You avoided the people you felt uncomfortable with, unless you felt you had to say something when a row broke out.

Time has moved on and a lot of other pubs have opened and a lot of old regulars feel more comfortable in the new pubs. A few of us still pop in to the pub from time to time to see how old friends are but know that most of their friends can be found elsewhere, so hang out there instead.

The absence of old friends has nothing to do with people complaining to the landlord about the behaviour of others but just a moving on to somewhere new.

I miss a lot of the old pub regulars but know where I can find them. I don't feel comfortable with some of the new regulars but that's life.

This pub is still the best place for making Family Tree contacts so I'll still pop in for the occasional drink while that's the case.

I think at one time there were a lot of people who sparked off each other, in the sense that they ran with a topic and batted it back and forth, nicely or otherwise. Now it tends to be milder conversation...perish the thought but it may just be we are all getting older and calmer? or have grown out of the novelty of the internet even?
