I live on a narrow road, sometimes made narrower by cars parked either side. As I'm also on a corner, and there's a white line outside my house to stop people parking there, so the bus can get round..
A huuuge Lorry has just spent 5 minutes parking right outside my house. He could have gone further down the road, there's only one car parked, just off the white line, then a good few hundred yards of straight, empty road. But no, he's parked right over the white line, and left the lorry. Thoughtless, selfish Bustard!

The bus (just one an hour, if we're lucky) is due in 15 minutes.

I also don't fancy the lorry staying there overnight, as I have a very small front garden and if the thing goes over in the wind, it will smash into my house!!!!!.

If he stays too long phone 101 and tell the police he is causing an obstruction

Hang on Maggie, i will pop over and help you move it.

The cheeky bustard!

:o))

Mind you, perhaps the lorry will act as a barrier and prevent miscellanious objects from flying through your window.

Or you might be able to enjoy watching an argument between a bus driver and a lorry driver.

A White line on the side of the road is NOT a no parking line, It's a "Edge line" which is there to show were the offical edge of the road is.

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 26 Oct 2013 17:59

Maybe so, but are you aware that it has the same status as a solid white line in the middle of the road? no crossing it?

one night I was on my way home and was being tailgated by a police van, thinking that they wanted to come by, I moved over to let them pass.........
instead, they stopped me and breathalysed me, on the grounds that they were entitled to, as I had crossed the solid line bordering a foot wide bit of cross hatch( which I believe was only put there to artificially narrow the road..........)

well I hope you passed the test!!!

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 26 Oct 2013 18:21

Bobtanian, The highway code has no rules for an "Edge line" and it does not have the same status as a solid white line in the middle of the road,

Lines and lane markings on the road are covered in the highway code rule (127 to 132) http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_070563.pdf

if you know different then post the link

Bobtanian Report 26 Oct 2013 18:28

maybe, but that's what plod claimed, its a solid white line, that is also why where people have drives onto the road, it is then a broken set of lines across the entrance

I had previously thought that it was to mark the edge of the road, in the dark

and yes I did pass........

mind you I DID comment that if I was able to open the hatch back they could've driven in!!!

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 26 Oct 2013 18:40

Bobtanian, The situation you posted was different, and the line you crossed was not an Edge line,

Rule 130 is the rule you broke

If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency

Sorry - got distracted. Went upstairs to 'net curtain' the situation (or peek through the blinds in my case)
The bus was (as usual) late. It stopped at the bottom of the road and tooted. Lorry driver re-appeared - and had to back the huge lorry up a cul-de- sac on the other side of the road.
Bus driver left hand on horn as he passed :-D

I stayed upstairs and cleaned my bedroom :-(

Quite so Roy this was a up slip road in town from a low roundabout that crossed a railway line, one side had the edge line and the other a narrowing/tapering crosshatch,

I thought that allowing a police vehicle precedence was a must....................................................so I slowed and moved over........but at 1045 pm they were after a pull, and I was it!!

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 26 Oct 2013 21:08

I have had the same thing happen to me with regard to the police looking for a reason to pull me, if they are not showing a blue light don't move over for them,

Had that happened to me i would ask what rule i had broke that gave them the right to pull me and breathalys me then when he quoted my so called misdemeanor i would have said OK but as you where Tailgating me under Rule 126 of the highway code it states

Stopping Distances. Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. You should leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front so that you can pull up safely if it suddenly slows down or stops. The safe rule is never to get closer than the overall stopping distance, so he is also in breach,

Then i would request that another Officer attends to breathalys the officer driving that tailgating police vehicle, Due to him also being suspected of Drink driving he would not be alowed to breathalys me.

On the odd occasion that i do get stopped the police love me :-D

Edit tailgating is a form of harassment even when done by a police officer
