Been there got the t-shirt it's a hard place. I feel for you.
Here is something.

I could tell you that this silence
will long rub against your legs,
that the sound of the electric can opener
will long summon her shadow
to the kitchen . . .
I could tell you that every cat you see
and some you don't,
will scratch and mew at the door
of your memory . . .
But I won't mention these things,
because the claws of grief are sharp.
I will say instead that your cat
is curled up somewhere in a sun spot
waiting to hear you come home,
at which time she will put on
her old aristocratic act of indifference
to let you know that you did, after all,
take longer than the expected time . . .
But soon, in her arrogant but casual way
she will edge nearer, forgiving
your human ineptness,
allowing you to finally hold her
and scratch behind her ears
while she is purring purring purring
to welcome you home.

I know how you feel, I am still very raw from the loss of my Jay boy. Why do we do it. We put ourselves through it because we are the good animal owners and love them more than we love ourselves. My heart goes out to you. <3 <3 <3 Elaine.

What lovely words, Rollo.

I am sorry you have had to make that dreadful decision to part with your cat Kate, Paula, having been through it myself on several occasions I can feel your pain. We have to do what is right for our beloved pets but it's very hard to let go and tho you know you are saving them pain and suffering there is still guilt in the decision.

I am sure your Katie will be with all the other loved pets that have gone ahead and are being fussed over by family members or those who love animals.

Sad too about your son's dog, Ann. There will be a very big gap in their lives for a long time.

Thank you all for your kindness. Rollo your words really touched my heart, I started to read to OH but cracked up before the end.

We buried Katie at the bottom of garden yesterday afternoon, its a lovely spot and she loved the garden. It was hard getting up this morning as our first priority was to feed Katie. I will move her things in time, but it still seems unreal, I think she will just come sashaying through the door.

Pain is the price we pay for loving

I've just read about your cat Paula- I'm so sorry. <3

It's very painful when we lose our animals. Mine (dog and cat) were like children to me. I lost both to cancer some time ago.

Losing a much loved pet is heartbreaking but by ending her pain you have repaid her for the love and companionship she gave you. I hope your happy memories will get you through this sad time <3
