The price of a ticket on the National Lottery from today is now £2 :-( and there are reports that the price hike will cut ticket sales by 50%.

National Lottery ticket sales are likely to plunge as this week’s price rise drives players away in their droves, experts warned yesterday.

If you play the National Lottery how will this affect you ?

Well we both do wed and sat £9 in all will be dropping the wed ones and one line on the sat lotto so will do 4 lines and one thunderball. So still £9 in total
can't afford to speculate £16 per week .

We both only increased our lotto lines as we did new ones cos we forgot our tickets and then didn't want to drop them in case they came up

On a weekly basis a little flutter doesn't look too bad but when you calculate it on a monthly basis it looks good money being thrown away.

We haven't had any big wins anyway

Bet others will cut down too

We will still do our one line. I think it will be people who buy more than one line that will decrease theirs.

I do the euromillions. That cost £2. The jackpot often reaches £100,000,000; as appossed to the £4M typical of the National Lottery ;-)

Graham Report 5 Oct 2013 09:48

I just checked the Euromillions result. I won £5.80 last night :-) I won £7.70 last week and £8.80 the week before :-D

Gambling is expensive, and I doubt it will have a big effect on Lottery. You cannot pay £1 for most betting (try giving bookie £1) and families who enjoy a gamble usually spend quite a few pounds per week.

If people can afford to lose their stake, I have no problem with it. But when you see people going without just so they can achieve their "dream", it seems wrong

JustJohn Report 5 Oct 2013 10:16

Just seen this in a report by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medecine :-S

"The introduction of the national lottery was associated with an increase in mean household gambling expenditure from £1.45 to £3.81 per week, and an increase in the proportion of households gambling more than 10% of total income four-fold from 0.4% to 1.7%. Among households with income of less than £200 pw, the proportion gambling more than 10% of their income increased from 0.6% to 3.2%."

Also noticed that average houshold expenditure on "fun and leisure" which includes TV, cinema, football and gambling is now over £63 per week. And I know an ordinary family who have 4 football season tickets, full sky package, frequently visit cinema as a family and buy several lottery tickets and many scratch cards.

And the trend seems upwards in these austere times, so it may be that Camelot have done their homework well ;-)

It won't change the number of tickets/lines we buy as we only occassionally have a 'punt' perhaps 4 lines a month between the two of us, 2 of those on the Euro Lottery.

Long term frequent players who have used the same lines week after week must be in a quandary. If they halve the number of lines purchased, in the back of their minds will be that the dropped ones will come up for a major prize.

It’s a mugs game really, and should only be played if you can afford the cost. One of the offspring runs a syndicate at work – 14 participants paying for entry into the Wednesday and Saturday draw. They’ve never recouped the cost over the 4 week period in the two years it’s been running.

Retailers have said that if the number of line is halved, they will still get the same amount in commission. The Inland Revenue will also still receive their 12%. That’s from your taxed income, don’t forget!

I would love to know what you said in your last two posts OFITG :-S

I very rarely play the lottery and if I do it's usually the Euromillions so I doubt it'll have much of an impact on me. The only real difference is that I'll probably choose the Euro one over our own more often.

As I gave up alcohol over 10 years ago, also that I have substantially reduced my cigarettes, and that due to mobility problems can no longer get to my weekly night out at the bingo, and that where I will be going I cannot take my money with me :-D my £6 a week on the lottery is my little bit of fun, but that's all it is, a bit of fun, if I win I win if, I don't I don't, I won't lose any sleep over it, all the increase means to me is I will buy one ticket less each week :-)

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 5 Oct 2013 15:36

We do the lottery too as a bit of fun cos not able to get out now socially so not spending money on nights out ,

We do like a glass or two or wine at the weekend but that's the extent of of our luxuries

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 5 Oct 2013 15:40

We make a point of not doing the same numbers every week so have a lucky dip, that is to guard against missing out if the numbers come up when we don't do it.

Hi AnnC, just a thought, could it be that the one who spent £290.
