Yesterday we ate tinned fruit a year out of date. Seem ok so far. And now I have just seen this in our local paper.

Which? said it is safe to eat these items after the best before date: Tinned vegetables and fruit, packet dry food like pasta, biscuits, crisps, fizzy drinks, jam, properly sealed honey and sugar.

It is not safe to east raw meat and poultry, cooked meats, soft cheeses, and dairy products although eggs can go two days beyond the best before date, and peanuts.

You little devil you...lolol

I have family and friends who do the same. If you have a compromised immune system please be more careful.

I have always placed eggs in water to test their usability, that stems from keeping chickens and storing eggs in isinglass.

I have to say though that after my sister passed away I threw out a lot of her 'hoard' I think that stemmed from deprivation during the war.

A few years ago a couple on their Golden Wedding Anniversary ate a tinned chicken that they had been given as a wedding present. No ill effects whatsoever. Tins never used to have best before or use by dates and I am sure most of us ate things that these days would be deemed well out of date.

Dates on tins is a relatively recent thing. 'Best before' is more of a guide for stores and stock control. Unless the tin is really rusty, or blown, I would use it!!
