Itchy!

Fred and his mate brought me in a bag of rose-hips. These, as I am sure you know, are full of little hairy pips that you need to remove very carefully if you cook them or you have a terribly itchy botty!

I thought I would pre-empt this problem by taking out the pips and little hairs before I used them. After an afternoon with my knife, I think there was only one bit that didn't itch!

Hope it was worth the effort, Sharron :-D

Probably not.

You'll know better next time. What are you going to do with them?

Sharron

Sharron Report 28 Sep 2013 23:29

I don't know but they are in the freezer now. That will give me more time to think.

If you are using them for making syrup or jam, don't cook them in aluminium or Iron pans.
I suspect you may already know this though Sharron. :-)

Sharron

Sharron Report 29 Sep 2013 00:43

I didn't know that.Thank you.

Can you tell me why?

Budgie Rustler

Budgie Rustler Report 29 Sep 2013 00:47

I read somewhere It takes away the vitamin C I believe.

Sharron Report 29 Sep 2013 00:51

Oh dear. I have a pre-historic aluminium preserving pan.

What about using a Pyrex bowl in the microwave.

Come to think of it I ain`t seen any of the old enamel saucepans about lately, but then I ain`t been looking for any. :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 29 Sep 2013 02:04

Then again, when did you last eat jam for the vitamin content?

My granny used to make rose hip jelly..... no idea how she did it, there are probably recipes in cyberland....... somewhere.

:-D

I think aluminium from the pot goes into the jam......or whatever you're cooking...

I threw my aluminium pots & pans out years ago.

Now I believe I have to throw out anything with teflon coating!

:-(

Years ago, a work colleague of OH made jam. In the microwave. Silly man used a plastic bowl... and when he took the bowl out of the microwave it was gooey, he got hot jam all over his legs, very serious burns.

edit: found this site, but it doesn't say how to shave them :-)

I made rose hip syrup once but it wasn't Delrosa by any stretch of the imagination.

I managed to get badly burned in a silly way once.

Seem to remember my gran used to cook the rosehips then strain them through muslin to get all the pippy bits out.

Sharron

Sharron Report 29 Sep 2013 07:43

They need to be strained at least twice as I recall. So it took the best part of three days to make something that didn't taste much cop anyway.

Couldn“t agree more.
Always hated Rose Hip Syrup as a kid, but just after the war, we were stuffed with anything that was reputed to contain vitamins to compensate for our "poor" diet, which was probably healthier than many kids have now.

Sharron Report 29 Sep 2013 08:19

I only made it in the first place because I had been a Delrosa addict. Can
still remember the taste and wanted to replicate it.

Don't like jam very much but there is all that fruit hanging about in the hedge and it is all part of fooling Fred into thinking he is being useful.
