As I said at the beginning, Android is the operating system - just like Windows.
A Smart phone is a generic term for phones that do clever stuff.
Android isn't a make of phone as such, it is what makes the phone work.

As far as I can tell, from Google, a Smartphone is a general term for a clever mobile phone while Android is one particular make. You can also get Blackberry, Symbian and others.

I don't understand all the fancy terminology, but a similar thing would be comparing a Vacuum Cleaner with, say, a Dyson.
