Guess when XP expires I will have to upgrade my computer

I have XP and use google chrome browser at the mo

Have an apple I pad that have got used too and grandson is trying to persuade me to get an Apple PC/laptop but the price is out of my range at the mo And wouldn't want my old FTM to be incompatible as I have extensive tree info on it,don't know if it would but don't want to take the chance

I have no problems with Firefox ...used it since ..forever... It has never crashed, hung, or otherwise misbehaved ....

so, hey, it is a nano second slower, and lacks a "feature set " ...as I don't know what it is ..I presumably have never regretted the fact I don't have one ..

Sure Mozilla is a great browser with reasonable support for modern standards and free. Along with Chrome & Opera it has extended the useful life of XP quite a bit.

However .... both Chrome and Opera are faster, have fewer bugs and a better feature set. The downside for people used to IE is the different interface - Firefox is not radically different to IE.

From q2 2013 Microsoft will not be releasing any further patches, security updates etc for XP. Zilch apart from the fact that activation will still work. A new install will not be able to pick up updates eg SP3 online from Microsoft. Thus those who need to run it after April 2014 had better make sure they have downloaded all the updates they may need.

The major browsers are likely to drop update support for XP by end 2014.

It is already the case that there are no Win7 drivers for a lot of older kit eg scanners, sound cards and conversely no XP drivers for newer kit. That now extends to motherboards and laptops i.e. the IT industry has pretty well called time on XP. One way around the lack of modern hardware support for XP is to run it in a "virtual machine" under Win7/8.

The most popular free security packages are likely to continue support for XP into 2015 but after that who knows?

In the context of web browsing it is very expensive to provide full compatibility with earlier versions of IE ( 6.7.8 ) and even for IE9 it can be a pain - it has by far the lowest standards score of any modern browser. Thus many sites simply don't bother or do the absolute minimum.

GRu web site has been created using AJAX JQuery and a Microsoft SQL Server database. It runs on Microsoft IIS web server. IE8 and earlier does not handle AJAX based code very well and one of the most typical problems is "timeout error". That is one of many, many reasons why still using IE8 is not the way to go.
btw hitting F5 is likely to work better than "back button".

I cannot see the point of continually posting about "errors" without giving any context at all such as browser version, OS and type/speed of connection. As to GRu other than "giving the matter our attention" they won't be devoting much resource to a solution so long as it only impacts a small number of people.

Its because the so called technicians on Genes Reunited are bloody useless,
do not get constant problems on Ancestry, perhaps they should give Ancestry a ring and ask how to fix this site :-D ;-) ;-) ;-)

If you want to use a more up to date version of Internet Explorer I'll bump up my instructions for installing.

If you wish to use a different browser such as those suggested by Rollo (all good) I will post instructions for those too.

I use Google Chrome and still get the error messages especially when trying to access Sent messages to see if one has opened.

RolloTheRed

XP allows you to update to IE8.

However it is quite a performance getting web sites using Ajax ( such as GRu) to perform properly using IE8. Given that XP users can install a modern browser for free such as Chrome, Opera or Firefox most sites no longer bother much with IE8. Those that do have money to burn e.g. the BBC.

Rollo what happens if you only have 6 7 or 8??

LadyScozz thanks for that I was begining to think it was only on my thread. I also had that blimmin page just now when I tried to go back to something else.

I have had the same error message a few times in the last week or so but it's usually when trying to get to "my threads" or my messages (both inbox and sent messages).

I just assumed it was because I have hundreds of threads and messages and the site "timed out" while trying to retrieve them all.

(1) Try pressing F5 a few times rather than the back button
(2) Don't use Internet Explorer 6 7 or 8.
