I was asking the audience.

Just watching the news and they are suggesting the distance between vehicles in seconds. Anyone any idea what a two second gap looks like?

well on the motorways there are chevrons painted on the road surface to give you a guide on the distance you have to keep between vehicles

I knew somebody would say that I think it said in the fast lane, didn't say a speed. But that is what the official suggestion was which is why we were confused. Maybe we misheard.

Not on all motorways though Ann, there are some on one stretch near here on the M5 but only a fairly short stretch. They are useful though.

60mph = 60 miles in 60 minutes
Or a mile a minute
Think that is 29 yards a second.

So at 60mph, you need to keep a gap of 58 yards or 170 feet or about 12 cars length.

Sure someone will correct my maths if wrong. :-)

Probably on a wet surface that gap would need to be doubled.

People found using a hand held device like a mobile phone whilst driving should not only receive a hefty fine but they should also have the device confiscated and im sure that would be a more affective deterant

lane hogging and tailgating has always been against the highway code and punishable by way of a fine but for some reason government have decided to now implement the law that has been ignored for many years now, Probably because they see it as another cash cow

People think the highway code is just that "a code" but its NOT the highway code is a book of general RULES and advice for all road users if you break any of these rules in a way that causes an accident then you can be prosecuted for your actions

Can I just throw in a thought please. I often see pedestrians walking along roads with mobile phones or music thingies, completely oblivious to other road users.

Should they be included in these penalties? They are using roads, just not paying Road Tax (VED) and VAT etc.

There was a campaign about keeping your distance, and it said .....

"Only a fool breaks the two second rule"

Apparently this takes 2 seconds to say, so looking at the car in front, note where it is, and you should be in that spot, or further away in two seconds, surprisingly it's quite a distance, and no way could the traffic on the roads now, would be able to keep such a distance.

I have seen impatient motorists blatantly use their mobile phones.

A bit off topic, but I think if a person drinks and drives,
there should be very strong penalties,
not the insulting and pathetic fines and suspended sentences handed out.

On my daily commute of around 20 miles each way I see dozens, DOZENS, of idiots yakking on their phones while driving, some even texting. I've seen them doing so while a police car is alongside them in the next lane, what happens - NOWT.

Why fetch these laws in when they're not being enforced?

As new laws come in which need to be enforced then so does there have to be an increase in manpower to actually do the enforcing.
You cannot bring new laws in and expect the existing police workforce to be able to enforce them.
How often do we read news stories of people bemoaning the fact that they had to wait ages for a police attendance to a (very often) fairly minor crime because they were elsewhere. It does work both ways.

I once saw a cyclist (in full lycra garb) cycling on the pavement, whilst on a mobile! :-|
I told him exactly what I thought of him - but he probably didn't hear 'cos he was soooooo important he could cycle where he bl**dy well wanted. After all - he had the all important thrush inducing shorts on didn't he??

What would be the penalty if you had a skinful, rode home on your bicycle along the pavement talking on your mobile phone?

I expect we have all done it :-(
