I needed reading glasses in my early forties and working in an office job kept them on most of the time during working hours. I think that by doing this my long distance sight deteriorated more, or it could have been just because I was getting older. :-D

Since then I have had varifocals which I have no problem with except the price! I prefer rimless lightweight lenses but because of the way they are constructed find that they are very fragile and my last but one pair cracked on the lens where the side is fixed and I had to have a new pair. :-(
I am still wearing these at the moment but one side kept coming off at the hinge but fortunately had the 'spare parts' from the previous pair and have managed to do a temporary repair job myself.

As it is nearly three years since my last eye test methinks it is time to find a cheaper alternative to those I prefer. :-(

I needed a new photo for my driving licence recently and the photographer insisted I took my glasses off, to comply with new digital passport regulations.

When I got the photos, I realised it was the first time in about 40 years that I had seen myself properly without them on.

I've had glasses for about 20 years, initially reading ones only. Yes, they were hung round my neck by a chain!

Then I realised that I couldn't read the overhanging signs on the motorway until the car was almost underneath them, by which time it was often too late to change lanes.

For a period, I had reading glasses and 'driving' glasses but swapped about 6 years ago to varifocals. They took a whiile to get used to as the ground looked banana shaped! At least it got me out of leveling a patch of the garden which we were doing at the time :-D

Rather than prescription sun glasses, we both have sprung clip-on polaroid lenses. Not particularly elegent, but we don't care!

My sister in law used to irritate me. She used to squint when she was reading, but was too vain to go to opticians.

We went out one night with a few friends & we all noticed that one of the women was wearing glasses, which she'd never done before.

When asked, she laughed. She bought a pair of "cheapies"....... to hide the "eyebags".

Sad, really. :-(

My dad had separate reading and distance glasses ............ but he gave the optician the wrong information when he was being tested

He said that he held the newspaper at arms length when he was reading


which he didn't


so he had take off his glasses to read, and bring the paper almost up the end of his nose to read it

I read in bed (for at least 15 minutes) before going to sleep.

My reading glasses usually sit on the bedside table, or in the top drawer.

Went to bed the other night, picked up specs but had a problem putting them on :-(

I felt like a right eejit...... I was still wearing the other specs.

I have to laugh at OH

he is longsighted, but has worn glasses since he was about 8

Despite that, his driving license from Texas said that he could drive without glasses!


He had cataracts done in late 2011/early 2012.

Optician does all the eye tests afterwards, and says that he had almost perfect long sight, so only needed glasses for reading

He asked to be prescribed glasses to wear all the time ................ so his are varifocal, with clear glass at the top.

His reason??

He'd worn glasses for so long that he hated to be without them :-S

I think that is what happened to mine ............... I did realise within 5 minutes that I was no longer carrying them. I went round and round this small area ans there was no sign of them.



I now have them on a cord or chain round my neck .................... opticians hate that, 'cos it can damage the glasses

But one said to me ......... "that's better than losing an expensive pair!"

I got my first glasses when I was in my early 20s, just for reading.

I now wear varifocals, and have other glasses for reading... I've had them for years, they're HUGE things, I'd be too embarressed to wear in public.

Sylvia ~ a friend of mine is a sales rep, she was in a store putting up a display & put her glasses down........ when she turned back the glasses were gone! Some people will steal anything. :-(

to make the writing bigger
you can hold down the 'Ctrl' key (bottom left usually)
and press the '+' key at the same time.

I started wearing glasses when I was about 6 ......... and the lens over one eye was covered because I had a lazy eye. The covering of the good eye was supposed to make the lazy eye work.

Not always ...........

......... I was one of the unfortunates where the eyes began to work independently :-D

I was 21 when an optician told me that was the reason I could so easily look down a monocular microscope AND draw at the same time

My eyesight was so bad that I would have been wearing the proverbial coke bottle, if it were not for the development of the light weight ones.

I had progressive lenses from about 35 or 40 on.

I developed cataracts that were operated on in 2000 ............... and the new lenses changed my sight from extreme short sight to almost perfect.

In fact, they gave me long sight!!

I then had to have reading glasses, which have also progressed to a form of progressive lenses so that I can use the same pair for reading and for the computer.



I think however that my distance sight is changing ............... and fear that I may be back to full time glasses.

I have found that I am much more sensitive to bright light since the cataract operation .................... but that I alos need bright light fro reading, etc.


Had more problems getting used to reading glasses ................. have to take them off and back on constantly.

The first pair, I put down while looking at scarves in a department store .............. and they were never found again.


A very expensive (ca £400) mistake!


Vari-color do not work for me ................ the lenses do not darken sufficiently.

I perch my glasses on my head and keep taking them on and off.

I really need them all the time.

When I get up, I don't put them on immediately and usually cannot find them
at some point in the day!

It is surprising how many people really need glasses but won't wear them.

I've worn glasses since I was about 21 and should probably have had them before then. I have astigmatism and started to get short sighted in my 30's and had bifocals.

I tried varifocals once but hated them!! I also had cataracts removed last year - a brilliant operation. I still need glasses, but can see reasonably well without them and the optician says I have 20/20 vision with them on!

OH, blue eyes and all, has superb distance vision and can read things like bus numbers before most people can see the bus!!! He says it's the result of a life spent sailing, looking at the horizon.

I too have reactolite so don't need sunglasses.

Oh specs! I hate the darned things.I have had reading glasses for a few years,then needed a pair for driving .Now I am on to Vari vocals that do the whole lot.I have had them for a few months now and wear them all the time :-SI still get a bit wobbly when walking in them as i feel the need to lift my feet a bit higher to meet the ground (if that makes sense) so walk like I'm three sheets to the wind sometime.
Now when it comes to looking in the mirror with specs on ,I think how old I look now :-(..I think it's because I look like I'm frowning all the time and bringing my head up and down to get things into focus.BUT I have to wear them because if I take them off I can't see a flipping thing lol.....Hate the pits they make either side of my nose :-S :-S
I have vari focal sunglasses too.But because the lenses in them are a different shape from my normal ones I can't walk without looking like I am a puppet on strings.
Am I getting old? Yes :-( :-(

Specs on... I can see that it's a cushion behind her back ...which seems to lead to her post!

Thank you Robert I shall do that, I didn't think of it that way, all I thought was why operate on an eye that can't see properly anyway.
Do you find that you can't just step onto escalators but have to "find" the first step first nor catch things thrown at you IE tennis balls cos you can't line up where they are coming from?
