Oh Shelley Rose, if you had had a camera that would have been a prize winning video lol just several years too soon!

Did you have a dog to help eat it all lol

Scozz, I am an apple shape, not pear or hourglass, just apple lol

I do buy naughty chocolate type desserts in those little tubs, but only when they are on offer so work out about 40p each or something. The Toffee Penny ones are wicked!

TS, it was the thought that counted, did you manage to get it out of the flask lol
I bet it raised a smile at the time.

I'm with you George, absolutely love rice pudding with lots of nutmeg on top. :-D :-D

I can remember the first rice pudding my father made after my mum died this was in the mid 50's when mums stayed at home, dad had never cooked before, so he put the whole packet of rice in a container and put it in the oven (the oven we had didn't have a glass door)! when he thought it was cooked he just unlatched the door and the rice pudding came out to greet him, it was everywhere!

My husband loved rice pudding. When he was in hospital and couldn't eat very well I decided to make him one and take it in for him.

I put it in a wide neck soup flask and set off for the hospital. When I opened the flask the rice pudding was practically solid. I can only assume it continued to cook in the flask throughout my 45 minute journey.

Sharron - just checked Tesco Groceries - I put in pudding rice and after all the tinned stuff up came Tesco pudding rice 500g for 99p.

Happy shopping

Not me! We don't eat dessert very often, so when we do we make it a doozie!

No way on this earth would I pay $$$ for a teeny pot of chocolate mousse from the supermarket.

If I want cream I have cream, not that fake stuff in spray can. I eat butter, not margarine... I have no idea what's in most margarine (how do they get it to set?) and the scrape I have must be better for me than chemically "enhanced" spread.

We have a sensible, balanced diet, sometimes have dessert, rarely have takeaway food.

The recipe I gave for rice pudding really is loaded with sugar, all that condensed milk.

Sharron Report 3 Aug 2013 09:38

This discussion of milk puddings is brilliant but the last one has hovered over what I was really getting at.

You were saying how wicked that rice pudding was and how you would feel so naughty eating it because it would make your hips grow.

They have persuaded us that eating perfectly good nourishing food is somehow wrong and that we should pay them for a tiny, very expensive portion of something inferior because they have, somehow, made it less harmful for us.

So now, people who could be spending pennies on basic ingredients are spending loads of money on little pots of muck and feeling virtuous about it.

How's this for timing?

Edit!!! the whole thing, from http: to slideshow is the link. I didn't want to leave it on one line in case it extended the width of this thread.

PSD ~ if you like sweet rice, you might like this. Recipe from a booklet that came with the microwave.

Caramel Rice Pudding

1 cup Arborio rice
3 cups hot water
295gr can sweetened condensed milk
1 tablespoon vanilla essence
30gr butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 eggs, separated
2 tablespoons caster sugar
cinnamon sugar, to garnish

In a large microwave safe glass bowl, combine the rice & hot water. Cook for 12-15 minutes on HIGH, stir after 6 minutes. Drain & set aside.

In micrwave safe glass jug, combine the condensed milk & butter. Cook for 6 minutes on 60%, stir every 20 seconds, to prevent boiling over.

Stir the rice, lemon juice, egg yolks and vanilla into the caramel. Put into a 2 litre micrawave safe pudding bowl.

Beat egg whites until stiff, gradually beat in sugar.

Spoon the egg white mixture over the rice pudding & sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Cook for 5 minutes on Medium (50%)

Allow to stand for 5 minutes before serving with cream or ice-cream.

:-D

I've made it twice, 2nd time I used 2 whole eggs, didn't bother with the meringue. It is VERY sweet.

My Mum used to make rice puddings, but I didn't like the skin. I have made my own years ago but now I get the tinned ones, usually from Lidl, in fact this thread has made me fancy some so will heat some in the microwave in a mo. I often add porridge oats to the tinned rice or some other cereal with fruit or chocolate in. I do have a very sweet tooth, and a fat tum!

When I had a spell of working nights at the Railway station in the Parcels office, I would buy sachets of ready to mix Semolina, you just poured hot water on and stirred I think. It was incredibly sweet but just what I needed to keep me awake and energised through a cold night. I don't think you can buy it now tho.

Just off to open a tin, lol

Sharron Report 2 Aug 2013 23:45

I shop at Aldi and Lidl and do an internet shop once or twice a year for the things I can't get there, usually Vegetarian Week when Quorn is reduced.

I didn't find pudding rice or blancmange on the Tesco site so I bought them from Sainsbury, along with a tin of black treacle because I have exotic tastes.

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 2 Aug 2013 23:07

Tesco also stock pudding rice and it is not on the shelves selling all the other varieties of rice.

Me I always used to love the brown bits around the side and still love the brown skin. OH makes it now and is happy for me to have the skin.

In the winter if the oven was on cooking a dinner - in went a rice pudding and OH does the same.

Sharron

Sharron Report 2 Aug 2013 22:33

Thank you.

Will have a bash at that.

I love blancmange too.

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 2 Aug 2013 22:31

My cookery book says you make ground rice pudding the same way as cornflour pudding.

The recipe for cornflour pudding is what I would call blancmange, except that instead of putting it in a mould to set, you put it in a dish in the oven for 40 minutes on a very low setting.

Sharron

Sharron Report 2 Aug 2013 21:26

Mine is in a cellophane bag with no instructions.

I need somebody with more experience to pass on their knowledge.

Amokavid

Amokavid Report 2 Aug 2013 21:20

Sharron..........I just follow the method on the packet, lol

It can be eaten straight from the pot but we like it to bake in the oven for a little while, hubby likes a skin, lol.
