After reading a comment that under 16 year olds could be using this site, so no rude words or jokes should be allowed.

How many of you have parental control set on your computers just incase your grandchildren or young children should be using your computer.

I know I tried it once and couldn't even type "Sussex" so gave that up pretty quickly

You can set up parental controls for individual user accounts on your computer.

It is a condition of membership that the site is not to be used by anhyone under 16 years of age without the supervision and permission of a parent, guardian or teacher.

My youngest has had her own laptops and ipads since she was 12.....I doubt whether parental control was set up on them....will have to ask

Most young teenagers know far more than we did at their age

It is possible to block certain actual sites as well as sites with certain types of content and the settings are password protected.

It is frightening how in just a short space of time technology has progressed to such an extent.

Last time my daughter who is now 16 visited with her ipad.....she and her older sister were laughing over some very graphic photos of "private parts" she had managed to get up.

Now I wouldn't have done that in front of my parents at that age

Gosh the whole topic is going to far. I can't imagine anybody under 16 looking at GR - load of cobblers.

I wonder how many parents actually bother with parental controls - my grandson can run circle around me when it comes to breaking internet codes. Haven't a clue where he learned it. It is the upbringing that determines how a child/young person behaves on the internet.

Have another friend called Dick and even some of his emails end up in the trash because of the name. :-D

What a ridiculously sweeping statement to make.

There have been the odd under 16 year old on here....but doubt very much whether they bothered with the chat board.

On another site I have used about a certain medical condition....a woman complained about the rude jokes as her 11 year old daughter read the boards....it was then asked of her whether she minded her 11 year old reading about certain mens sexual problems or should they have been removed as well?

Very well said Jax

This site had moderators that were there during the day but also had a word recognition thingy set up

One day a lady was talking about trying to lose weight and said she had been going to Weight watchers...unfortunately she had not put a space between the two words so it was picked up with (content removed) instead :-D

Certain place names were also removed especially the North Lincolnshire town

I noticed the the Top Gear crowd based their hovercraft engineering unit in the Yorkshire town of Penistone.

Well my children didn't have Laptops etc I have only had mine 6yrs ( I am a silver surfer) but my grandchildren have parental contols on theirs because kids are naturally nosey and will look at stuff usually because their mates have heard/seen something and it gets passed around. Schoolboy humour and all that.

My children/ grandchildren have had a very good upbringing btw.

I know a couple of under 16s that are into family research and go on sites with their parents so it is not cobblers CC.

If a child can google 'hamsters' or 'birthday cakes' ( not to mention any other kind of cake!) , and get a porn site then parental control is no bad thing.

I put it on briefly when a younger child was visiting, but had to remove as it blocked legit sites we use, but I wouldn't hesitate to reinstate if there were young children here. :-D

I don't use the internet on my phone...mainly because I have the laptop in front of me all day.....wonder if phones can have parental control added as most seem to come with internet now?

I know I blocked the internet completely for my daughter some years ago...only because it was costing me 50p a day on top of the contract phone charge.

She has had internet included since she was 15.....she set it up so no idea what she has had access to

Jax - I think one of the big concerns for many parents includes people who try to impersonate others or make out they are someone or something that they are not

There is at least one person age 17 currently very active on GR, and that person has been researching since the age of 13 ...................... so it most certainly is not "cobblers"

However, I do remember back to earlier days on GR .......................

it was impossible to type Sussex, Middlesex, etc

It was impossible to type Pakistan, the Pakistani cricket team, etc

There was an automatic computer programme that automatically changed words to ................

Sus***, Middle***, ****stan, etc

I believe it was also impossible at one time to type names of stores such as Asda, Tescos, etc ................ your post would disappear.

That's why some people still type A**a, or T***o

The asterisking of "naughty" words continued until about 2006 or 2007!

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 31 Jul 2013 22:15

at one time you were not allowed to directly publish any other websites name, as you say asterisks and the period(dot) were not allowed so it became (.)

.com .co.uk were verbotten...........

I would not have thought this site would be cool enough for anybody under sixteen to even consider visiting.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 1 Aug 2013 00:01

Would have agreed Sharron but guess there are some uncool kids around ....

jax

jax Report 1 Aug 2013 00:48

Yeah some uncool kids that have never heard a slightly smutty joke before :-D

They are probably not allowed to watch TV after 9 pm either just incase they hear something rude
