I can't sleep unless I have read for a while first,even if it's just a few minutes when I'm really tired and find myself reading the same line over again without it sinking in :-D

I also loved Marina Lewycka's books. I think she has a fourth book out, but haven't read it yet.

I often wonder , there are a lot of people who don't read, but what do they do if thet can't sleep?

Have you tried any of Marina Lewycka's books?
Lighthearted and witty, 'A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian' was her first book, extremely funny, followed by 'Two Caravans' which was equally lively.
I've just read her third, 'We Are All Made of Glue' and found it to be as good a chuckle as the previous two. :-D :-D :-D

Do give the Disc World series a try - you don't have to read them in sequence.

In our opinion, the earlier ones are the best. Terry Pratchett adds footnotes, which are sarcastic comments on todays society. :-D

Drat I had it , the devil rides out a again, still funny but a bit more serious , when I have finished with my books I give them to my dentist who enchange them for a donation, otherwise I would of sent it you, the 3rd part has just come out so when the price drops a bit I will get it on my kindle.

Try Manda Sue Keller as well I have read all of hers.

Hayley I love Paul O'Grady, well I would lol he is from my neck of the woods I have read 'at my mother's knee' :-D and must look out for the follow up which I haven't read and his new one also :-D

Rose do try Tom Sharpe as Maggie says the are really funny, my favourite was Wilt.

Also agree with Hayley about Paul O'Grady's book 'At my mothers knee and other low joints' is the full title.

Neubie a friend of mine was a big fan of Discworld, but somehow I have never gone beyond looking at the covers lol.

Sue I have read all the Alan Titchmarsh books...just wish he'd do my garden as well lol.

Mary, not a big fan of Clarkson, so have never looked at his books really.

I like to re-read my Beverley Nichols books, he's nicely waspish about the neighbours ;-)

If you want lighthearted novels where the heroines never take themselves too seriously, try Katie Fford and Judy Astley.
The Miss Read novels, particularly the "Thrush Green" series, are lovely, warm hearted country village tales, full of amusing characters.

Like you Rose, I have read and re-read every Bill Bryson book and still laugh my head off each time.

The other one I love to read is Jeremy Clarkson, his books also make me laugh out loud, he is so funny. :-)
