The staff will be paid first, then the HMRC

If they get paid at all!

Comet were brilliant when they started. Remember their store in Wrexham and that must have been before 1970.

Wooolworths (everything for sixpence) were brilliant.

Kwiksave (small range, throw it out in outer cardboard boxes and rune eveything by computer) were brilliant.

MFI, JJB ......

But times change so rapidly in retail, don't they. And these big companies don't seem to be able to keep up.

The 'bigger' companies.........squeeze them out

I shop at the locals....I have to go to the big chains as and when

I hate giving my wages to Sains/Tesc or other

One thing we have all done is filled up at Tesco/Sainsbury/Asda because we can fill the tank for £40 whereas in the village it would cost us £41. Now the village pump has closed down and we pay £42 to the supernarkets and spend a further £1 getting there.

Which is a long way round of saying I agree with you, Gins. I have just decided to pay 60p for my milk in a local shop. It is 45p in Asda, but my local shop in Welsh and the milk is from cows who moo in Welsh. Worth extra 15p a day.

John,

My husband is Welsh, I 'm not...call me Irish/Yank/York’s......I don’t mind

...........but, my tank takes £85+ (this month, two months ago it was £75+!!) to fill up now, no, I don’t drive a 4x4

I need to drive to your place, to fill up for £45!

JustJohn Report 1 Nov 2012 22:07

It was an example, Gins. Rather good, I thought - but must not praise myself :-D :-D

I don't earn £85 a month!!! My car costs £23 to fill up with unleaded and £27 with that super unleaded. And it tootles along the motorway at 85mph (oops, if the speed limits would allow).

It is a small Mercedes (better known as a Smart car). I love it more than any other car I have had. And I have owned them all. From Minis right up to Allegros and Triumph Heralds:-D

:-D :-D Not even given my little car the dignity of comparing it with a lawn mower. We do have a Rolls Canardly for our second car :-P

Linda A couple of suggestions for next casualty here.

The only one I miss is Borders, the US book company. When I came down here to S Wales they had a large branch in Talbot Green shopping centre. Apparently it opened in 2006 and closed in 2009.

There is nothing like browsing in a book shop, whilst OH is shopping for clothes, candles, cushions etc. And I miss Borders a lot.

Have noticed many of these chains remain strong whilst founder is there at the helm. Look at demise of Tesco in 1977-1980 period (Jack Cohen died 1979 and there was a hostile takeover mounted in 1978 by Kwiksave). Look at Iceland (now Walker is back it is again thriving).

Well I for one will be disappointed if our Comet store closes down. When I want to buy a new electrical appliance I go to Currys first ,because of the location, and normally I am invisible. I have never been approached in a proper manner at Currys. Its amazing if I take my daughter and pretend she is on her own the salespeople come out of the woodwork.
When I go to Comet someone has greeted me with a 'good morning' .My friend who is in her mid 70's commented on how helpful one of the computer salestaff had been to her. On another day whilst browsing I asked about an Ipad as I didn't fully understand them and had a thorough explanation given. I have bought many things from them over the years and feel sorry if mismanagement has been their undoing.-jl
