I used to love doing all kinds of competitions and was always picking up entry forms in the supermarket and buying products with competitions on the label. I also used to buy the Competitors Journal a paper that was full of competitions, ideas on slogans etc. The type of competition that you now see on the television, chose answer a, b or c, to a very simple question and pay high telephone rates to enter just doesn't have the same appeal.

I enjoyed making up slogans and would do this whilst ironing or doing the housework. I always had a pen and paper close at hand to jot down ideas and I went to the library to research the answers. Before the day of home computers. Maybe the arrival of computers has put a stop to this kind of competition.

Although never winning the elusive luxury holiday or open top sports car I have won loads of small prizes the best being a huge Harrods Christmas hamper of food. The most useless being a years supply of tights - 52 pairs all size small and all in American Tan. I am 5' 10" and couldn't stand the shade American Tan but I did find someone else who was pleased to receive them.

Is there anything that you wish you could still do or have that isn't available today

I wish I could clean my house from top to bottom in one day as I used to, I wish I could clean all my windows and curtains in one day as I used to.Now due to being in constant pain and not having the energy I used to have I take one room a day and one window a day.(when i feel like it lol) but hey ho I have a lot to be grateful for so shouldnt complain. :-) :-) :-)
There are lots of things I wish I could do now that I used to years ago but unfortunatly my head still thinks like a 30yr old but the body tells me different ;-) ;-)

I am the same as you Wendy, used to love the competitors journal and was always writing slogans for competitons. We used to scour the supermarket. It all seemed to seize up about 10 years ago when we stopped seeing that sort of competition. I won lots of small prizes, my favourite was a day at Gatcombe for the horse trials for two of us including parking and entrance to one special area.
I also won a couple of large toys for grandaughter and thatw as about the last I won. Don't like the send a postcard draw type competitions, it was the keeping my brain active I enjoyed.

Other than that I miss being able to walk up a mountain (even a small one) not that we have been up many but we did have the ability and did go up Old Man Coniston and Haystacks.

Its interesting to read about what others miss from ... way back when ... and although I wouldn't want to be without the internet I think that a lot of things have changed since its arrival. Children don't play outside so much now, although there is always the safety aspect to be considered, but play inside with computer games etc. i have to admit that there have been times when I have thought that I would go for a walk and get some exercise and then thought that I would just look on GR before I go and ended up staying in and doing look ups or research, which I love doing.

I miss holding my OH's arm or hand when we walk along as since his accident he now has to use a wheel chair / mobility scooter. :-(

Tenerife Sun Report 13 Sep 2012 11:04

Ahhh mummo I think that is both lovely and sad at the same time. You still have him that is the most important thing. My husband and I never went anywhere that we weren't holding hands and I loved every minute of it.
