Some years ago now,I had a knock from 2 suited gents, they explained they would like to use my address as a delivery one, they were genuine Royal Mail personel,

Next day they rang mid morning,,,,,any mail-?-NO,,,just after lunch time,,,,any mail yes.....was a birthday type envelope delivered ....NO,

the postman was took to court,,,,,he had been stealing Giros and birthday cards........so not all are honest to the job thats entrusted to them, its world wide,,,,,postman/postwomen do steal!

Ive sent card to Australia that never get there......but registered parcels never had one go missing or interfered with.

Sad isn't it, once upon a time postmen and women were proud of their job and this rarely happened. Unfortunately now things have changed. Never send cash by post. I usually don't even send cheques these days. Have all the bank detals of grandchildren and children and cash is transferred. Not the same as opening an envelope and finding a lovely cheque though.

It is worth reporting it though as then the post office can track the sorting offices which are having mail affected.

We had a parcel opened and resealed, we think it was probably as it came into the country at customs. OH should have received a war film DVD from his son he actually got two very delicate bracelets. I can only assume they opened two parcels and then accidentally swapped the contents when replacing them. At least it was a legal opening.

Joyce, pleased to hear that you have found out who it was from and what was in it. It's a shame that things like this are happening whether it's on the British or Dutch side.
Love, Sallie.xx

In Oz our mailboxes are usually at the end of the driveway, on the street.

a few years ago the postman/woman ran into ours & knocked it over (driving a motorbike). Our neighbour saw him/her!

Reported it to the post office. He/she denied it. We had to replace the mailbox.

He/she wasn't a very good postie ~ we used to find mail all over the front garden.

Eldrick Report 28 Jul 2012 10:00

Our postie is a total gent. Would trust him with absolutely anything. Reading this you would think the post office is run by the kray twins and staffed by the population of wormwood scrubs.

But think about it. If a postie was going to steal money out of a letter, he is hardly going to then deliver the letter slit open and minus the money, is he. Or she. No doubt someone will come back and say 'ah, but it happened to a birthday card to my friends neighbors budgie'.

Somehow, I dont think so.

We get a lot of post through, lots of parcels and have to say that Royal Mail do a sterling job with it, our post person is swapped quite often, but always very polite and cheery. Delivery times are good also, must be in the right place :-)

Cynthia Report 28 Jul 2012 11:07

I'm with you Eldrick. :-D

We always give our postie a little gift at Christmas because we are grateful for what they do.

There are always 'horror' stories about the bad apples in each and every profession, but I don't think having a slit envelope arriving through one's door quite falls into the category of 'horror' to be honest.

It's idiotic for people to send coinage through the post.

Unfortunately it's nothing new as it happened in years gone by too.

My Bil was a postman for many years (1960s onwards) and recently has been telling us of how traps were often set to catch dishonest postmen.
There was a case when a bag of mail was left behind a bush...reason given? he was too tired to walk any further. As you say Cynthia there'll always be rotten apples in every profession, but most are good,I know our postie is :-)

Don´t think it´s the person who delivers the post who is to blame. It would be too obvious.
They just get the flak.
