My first job was a Saturday job at Woolworths on the counter that sold cleaning materials.. My aunt came in one day and showed her disapproval not sure why. I didn't stay lon g but I remember they gave us a nice dinner.

My first proper job was after secretarial college at the offices of a Hospital Management Committee (remember them). I was a junior shorthand typist clerk and I quite liked the job even though I had to make tea and (burned) toast every morning and collect the milk from the hospital in the grouinds.

I have fond memories of that time but not so getting up, in the cold on a Saturday morning to sell ?Oxydol

I had a Saturday job working in a greengrocers, boss was a friend of my Dad, from the age of 13. Got 15/- a day. Worked there until I left shool at 16. Didn't have to give Mum any "keep" but I got a bag full of fruit and "greens" every week on top of my wages.

Loved it. Looked after the regulars. Everything was sold by the pound (weight), if the extra apple etc went over the pound I ignored it. Earned a fortune in tips :-D.

I worked as a Nanny's assistant for a Duke and Dutches it was a live in job in the grounds of their home a castle! it was off the beaten track and lonely.... and I wanted to go to college so left,went to college but ended up working in a shop that was like Are you being Served where the boss was called Mr R.(his name) or his father was Mr G.then decided nursing,,,,,qualified and spent abt 8 years round different wards incl A&E,

later in life back to studying to take a degree in social work and qualified as SW.

My father owned a drapers shop and I used to work after school and on Saturdays, I started doing this from about 12 yrs old I loved it. In those days my father did not have an electronic till, it was just a pull out drawer, certainly helped with my maths.

When I was 15 I started work in an estate agents for £3.10s a week.

Ann in Glos, you made me smile. My dad said i could leave school at 15 if I got a good job and that did not include Woolworths lol.

I got offered a job in the local Haberdashery/woolshop,had a great reputation, I worked Sat morning, Thursday night then the next Saturday morning. The boss called me to the office and offered me full time work. I started full time on the following Monday, stayed there for 4yrs till I married and moved away.

I think it set me up for future yrs, taught me good work ethics and customers relations.

My first unofficial job was working for my Dad as a message girl aged 9-the girl that he employed to run the errands,pick up the post from the post office etc.was not doing that,but socialising with her friends , and saying that there was no mail in the post box. I found the post box overflowing with letters and parcels,so he sacked her,and employed me instead.

Later, when I was 15 or 16, I worked for him at the week-ends and in school holidays.I continued working for him while attending Teachers' College-the extra money came in very handy for my books and petrol even though I was still living at home and paying board.It was very good training for life in the real world,and I learnt a lot in the time that I worked for him. :-) :-) :-) :-)

Edited to say that my Dad was a pharmacist, and was a well-loved "family chemist" to all his customers.

I had a Saturday job at Woolworths in Worthing in 1964 while I was at secretarial college. I worked on the gardening counter and loved it. No garden centres in those days, so it was very hectic on a Saturday. I was surrounded by fruit trees and it was like being in a little jungle. Nothing was pre-packed in those days, so all bulbs, seeds etc. had to be weighed and put in brown paper bags. Old-fashioned cash till, so had to work everything out in my head as I went along, which was very good for me! As Vera said, we had a lovely lunch too, which was a bonus. Paid 17/6d (roughly 87p in to-day's money!) which kept me in stockings, toiletries etc. plus a packet of 10 Escort (regrettably with hindsight) for the following week.
