People in northern New South Wales have been 'all shook up' after some earthquakes of 4.2 at or near Lake Keepit. They are the biggest they have had since 1969. No serious damage or injuries. The Aussies on here havent felt them. I think it was last night (their time), about 12 hours ago.

I'm in northern NSW - but much further north than where they got shaken up. I'm just south of the Qld border.

Didn't feel a thing.

But I've slept through a cyclone lolol

Hi Scozz, glad you slept so well. The people of Christchurch are rather nervous every time there is a shake. They have had so many and never know if there is going to be another big one.

Hi Huia

I can't imagine what it's like, living with the thought of an earthquake happening any time.

I have cousins in Auckland, they have friends "down south" and are always concerned for them.

I've also slept through an earthquake - a mild one - we were in a hotel at the time, on the 8th (I think) floor. There was a minor one a few hours later, when I was in the bathroom, watching my robe swaying on the back of the door. Not a nice feeling!

As you've guessed, I sleep very soundly. The family joke was that if a pipe band marched through the house I wouldn't wake up.

I have some years ago felt some small earthquakes here in the Hunua Hills and when we were travelling in the South Island we felt one when we were having our breakfast in our campervan in Christchurch. Only a small one though.

Definately didn't feel any shakes, Huia but then I was so tired last night I slept very heavily.

Glad you're ok Scozz :-D

Glad you are all ok. Must be frightening to suffer a lot of small shakes (as in Christchurch), remembering the last big one.

Huia,

The earth didn't move for me, either! but we are having our own problems over in the west, particularly in Perth and the south west region.

We've had minor damage to our house plus a couple of power cuts but some areas are unlikely to have power restord for days.

There are reports of a complete marina jetty, plus attached boats, being blown over in Mandurah, about 80 kms south of Perth

Hello EOS, there have been no big quakes in New Zealand lately. Just the usual small ones. Which is not to say that there wont be a big one again sometime, somewhere. Or another big volcanic eruption! Quite an exciting country in which I live.

Huia.

Dear Huia and Allan

Hello

It sounds terrifying to me.

Mother nature is certainly a force to be reckoned with, without all the pollution and other things going on in the world.

Your picture is lovely
.
Take gentle care
Very best wishes

Would you believe it !!

The bl**dy wind has picked up again and it's lashing down

. Hey ho, probably more power cuts! And I won't be able to see if we have had any more damage until it starts to get light in about 2.5 hrs time

Huia Report 10 Jun 2012 22:10

Cyclone Drena on 11 Jan 1997 at about 5.15 a.m. brought down a big branch of one of our trees, and it brought down our power line. The first we knew was that there was an almighty bang. When we peered out the front windows in the semi-dark we could just make out the tree on the drive. When it was light enough we went out and found a hole wrenched in the gable end of the house where the power line had been attached. It was my birthday, and I had a chook thawing in the fridge to cook for dinner. Had to throw it out eventually. We were without full power for 37 hours. The transformer on the power pole had been damaged and had to be replaced. What a birthday that was, very memorable.

We now have the power line coming in underground.

lol Huia...sorry about that , but it sounds humorous after the event.

We are fortunate that although the house is 20 years old now (we have lived here for 18 years) whenit was built it was in one of the first 'new' subdivisions where undergroung power had to be provided. However there are still many older suburbs around where overhead power is the norm.

Well it all adds to the excitement of life, Allan. I think we had sausages for dinner, cooked on the camping gas stove.

Huia

Huia Report 10 Jun 2012 22:19

When my husband was clearing the branches of the tree from the drive he heard the crackling from the power line which was underneath, so he was VERY careful.

We are out in the country, so no underground power lines for us except for that one coming to our house.

Allan

Allan Report 10 Jun 2012 22:29

Huia, although we are on a suburban block, we do live very close to the Estuary, so sometimes have to contend with flooded roads when there is a combination of very high tides and strong westerlis as is now occurring.

To be honest though, in the 18 years that we have been here this is the worst damage we have had, although only minor (until I can get outside when it is light, to make a full assessment!)

Hope you're OK Allan. The West is getting a hammering.

I'm way over the other side, northern NSW. It hasn't stopped raining for three days! Getting windy too. I expect I'll get blown down the street when I go out tomorrow :-(
