I like some newer names and some older ones. I love the name Charley for a girl, but also the name Florence (after my nan <3). Iris is lovely too.

David I have sisters called Gwendoline and Doreen named after my Mums sister who is Gwendoline Doreen she was named after her Mum's sisters Gwendoline and Doreen - I was quite agrieved I didn't get a family name till I realised I did but only for the first two days of my life. Dad was having none of it! I think I'm relieved I didn't now.

My children are called Leila, partly after the Palestinian 'terrorist' who blew up a plane (minus passengers) and is now a peace envoy, partly because my father converted to Islam when I was 12. Leila is the Islamic Juliet (Romeo and...)
Other child is Nina (little Anne) sort of after my sister,Anne! Both names are multi-national, which I like.
One of my grandsons has an extremely old Roman name - not many of those about - after his grandfather, great grandfather, and gg grandfather, who had it as their 3rd forename. Prior to that, the name was double barrelled ie Strange name-Smith.
Just realised with such unusual names, they can be easily traced, so have omitted the Roman name!!!!!
Safe to say grandson is the only child in a lot of years to have his forename!!
I call him Curly :-D

MY Great Grandmother named her children after names. from the Bible. Isaac.- Hannah.- Mary.-Frances-,Emmnuel -John -Daniel - Absalom. Sarah., others are what I call normal names. I wondered why ? this was. and then it came to me. she could not read or write but could reconize the names from the bible.

Myself, I use to be able to tell roughtly the year someone was born
because their names, names used at the time. I am not good at it now as the names do not follow on. .they often name their children names from people in Soaps.

It's strange how names can become stereotyped over the years.
My dad was called Denzil. When (a few years back) a friend of my daughter heard this, he said to me 'You don't look black' I asked why I should. Apparently, Denzil (or more probably the misspelt Denzel), along with Winston was/is considered a 'black' name!!
I pointed out that Denzil was Cornish - which is exactly where my dad came from, as had his family for generations!!!

Don't see my name coming back!!! My paternal grandmother was Jennet Ann and my maternal grandmother Nellie Lavinia

My Dad was Harman, his mother's maiden name, but strange thing was two of his brothers were called Harry and Harold - always seemed odd to me. Sisters Ella, Nancy, Margaret and Betty. I have so many Betty's in my family that they have to have an addition to their name to distinguish them - so there's our Betty, Tommy's Betty, Cyril's Betty, Betty Blue and now I've found a long lost cousin and she's Betty too!! And not one of them is Elizabeth!!

My grandson called Jacob and really suits his name.I also have a grandaughter Hannah and a daughter Catherine i also have a daughter Laura that is a old name but now has become common

My neighbour has four boys under sixteen called Abraham, Daniel, Joseph and Noah, her name is Keeley

I don't like trendy names, but also dislike a lot of the old names, there are so many Alfies and Charlies around everywhere and I know of two Sidneys as well. In our family including my o.h.'s sons and my son's cousins, there are 4 Isabelles with various spellings. I chose a name for my son that was sort of timeless, so his age can't be guessed from his name, the only comment he gets is that people expect him to have been born in November when he was actually born in July. He is very happy with his name and he has a biblical and family linked middle name of Samuel so he could have called himself Sam had he not liked his first name.

My o.h.'s son dislikes his Christian name so tells people his name is Sid and his wife still calls him Sid as that's the way he introduced himself to her.

I also think we have to watch the initials, one of my relatives has a daughter with the initials JAF and I know my late uncle was FAT.

A family friend of my daughter has 3 children under the age of 8 called

William
Albert
Ruby

which in my opinion are old fashioned/traditional names. When choosing names, you also have to think how they will be shortened in the playground.

For our daughters, we chose names which could be adapted to be one syllable gender neutral so they weren't stuck with a feminine one if they turned out to be tom-boys.
