Florence Report 12 Apr 2012 11:35

I was very shy at school believe it or not!!

so never really got to know them that well. If i,m going to pick i would say
my english teacher miss Lette who was very kind and patient, i had just gone up a class with better grades when my mother had to go in hospital.

I had to take mornings off to take care of her ,my sister afternoons.
So my teacher gave me extra attention so i could catch up. and not loose out. but not forgetting my best mate at the time Jeanette who also helped me.

Thought i would pop back and had to your thread after you being so kind letting me gatecrash yesterday.
Flo :-)

We had a teacher who loved to join in when playing rugby,

In my time he treated us like crash test dummies and was responsible for the broke bones of many

Me included

We had to run through the showers as they were always soo cold, and teacher always helped us on our way by smacking us on the bottom with a ruler oww...didn't half sting!

Have previously written in my family history book about a day at school swimming lessons. One of the girls gave the teacher a note from home saying "my daughter has a cold so must wear her vest when in the water" ....it's a true story honest :-0 :-D

Susan, That was very strong minded of you :-D

I'm sorry to hear that Ann, as you say it may have happened anyway but you can't help but wonder. Some of the PE teachers pushed so hard.

AnninGlos Report 11 Apr 2012 22:21

We had two like that Rose and they lived together ;-)

And the same as yours, they made my friend run round the field, she had a heart condition although it had not been diagnosed then. about a month later she died. I always held that teacher to blame but I think she would have died anyway, she had an enlarged heart (as it was called then).

Susan10146857 Report 11 Apr 2012 22:17

oooo Rose...we had one like that....I refused to strip for the showers

Rambling Report 11 Apr 2012 22:12

Every single PE teacher I ever had was an arrogant, boarish woman with no social graces nor understanding of anyone who didn't want to have thick thighs, and arm muscles like a male shot-putter on steroids, they were also indecently obsessed with having you strip and shower in front of everyone else...

One particular one I will remember for her insistance that the girl with the heart condition who was NOT supposed to do cross country should do so...I hope someone pulled her up on it, but I doubt it, people didn't complain much back then.

Can you tell I wasn't 'sporty' lolol, the best I ever got was a damning "tries hard" :-D

Yes that's right, and if you got detention you got a telling off at home too!!!

Susan10146857

Susan10146857 Report 11 Apr 2012 21:56

Didn't everyone get told off for not wearing their berets?Berets were to be worn until we reached home.

We were told that if we misbehaved whilst wearing our school uniforms we would be punished. The school took responsibility for our behavior until we reached home. ( and us of course )

AnninGlos Report 11 Apr 2012 21:49

Yes do, I have to say I had one who everyone was scared of. A male and he was said to have been suffering what I suppose we'd call post traumatic stress, remember I went to High School in 1951 so just post war. He would bawl anyone out for the least thing. I actually didn't have him for any lessons other than interest gardening (of all things). But he lived in my area and once came storming into the bus station when we were all swinging round the platform pole of the double decker bus. (It was stationary waiting for everyone to arrive it was a school bus). He caught a couple of us and gave us detention (for not having our school berets on.) :-( :-D

Mr Grimer, my English teacher when I was 13/14. He loved his subject and was a great teacher of it but nothing was off limits with him and he would often talk about other subjects, He had been with the RAF in WW2 and had 'life experience', and it showed in his teaching. He was great with everyone no matter who or what 'grade' they were, and put in time with those who needed a bit more individual help. Just a lovely man also.

Mr Taggart at primary school I remember with fondness for his love of poetry ( he taught maths, science and English) he was quite strict but very humourous and kind to me, the shy mouse lol, and introduced us to poetry and classical music and many 'random' interests besides.

I remember the headmaster at my junior school. Pop Lewis. He was into man management before the term was invented.

He always praised me to the hilt, making me feel I was the best pupil at the school. and something special. Probably he did that for the all the others in his fold, but I believed what he said and remember him with great affection.

Happy days

In juniour school I had a teacher called Mr Newcombe he was lovley.....
He was very strict but a great teacher!!...I was a tiny tot in school and I wouldnt say I was bullied but because I was this tiny doll I tended to always be at the back, never heard, never seen, quiet as a mouse he noticed this and always made an effort to make sure I had my voice heard......He was a fantastic teacher, I will never forget his kindness, tolerance and love to teach no matter who it was, we as a class were always involved, often wonder what happened to him.....*sighs*....THANKYOU MR NEWCOMBE FOR LETTING ME BE SEEN AND HEARD..... :-D <3 I was never small in your eyes I was always standing tall, and proud :-D

How sad shirley and what a bad reflection on the leadership of the school. Presumably it was not viable any longer as a private paying school and had gone over to the state system reluctantly. No need to make the pupils suffer though.
