Is she joining you Uzzi?

UzziAndHerDogs Report 2 Apr 2012 16:03

Sort of joining me, she is spending the 1st month in a hotel in Denia with saga, after that we don´t know but the idea is to sell her house and buy one over here. Meanwhile she has no intention of returning to the UK and it will be cheaper for her to to stay in a hotel out here than the care-home she was in.

Darned good luck to the lady ,and a better climate too for her retirement years ,comes to something though when a pensioner finds herself being ripped off by her county of birth and it's cheaper to live abroad on a pension ,no wonder so many have already done this. :-) Fred.

Care homes are expensive. It brought me to remember an article that was written a few years ago where a couple had made Travelodge their home:

UzziAndHerDogs Report 2 Apr 2012 16:22

All very true. it´s just cost Mum 3425 for a 5wk stint in the care-home it´s costing her 1400GBP for 4 wks all inclusive in the hotel, further months will be cheaper as there won´t be the flight cost.
Mind there will be mine as it´s me who´s going to have to fly back and pack her house up.
Even the care-home we are going to look at will be cheaper at €895 a month for a 2 bed apartment + her food and a some care. But that is in a proper residential village so is expensive.
Part of me thinks she brave but the other part thinks she must be batty as she really hasn´t thought it thro´beyond wanting to be with me. I can´t have her where I am hence hotels etc at the moment so will have to wait for house to sell. Up till then I guess she can change her mind.

Thanks Jacky, I´m still not sure if it will work out but I do believe that I am doing right. Not that I have much say in the matter anymore as Mum is adamant that she is not going back :-0. The next month is going to be a strain as she is a 3hr drive from us, so we have a lot to try and fit in on weekly trips to her.

UzziAndHerDogs Report 2 Apr 2012 17:47

Thanks Joy, Stray and Mersey.
I know I need all the luck going but I guess Mum needs some also. Even tho´ she has nobody left in the UK and she wants to be with me, it can´t be easy for her at 82 nearly 83 just to get up and go. ...Yes at the moment she could go back but the chances are packing up that house is down to me, she will not have a lot of say in what I keep or what goes so she is now going to have to put her complete trust in me. I´m feeling quite mellow towards her at the moment, not that I know why after the trick she pulled at the weekend. (don´t ask!) ..this could all change after Thursday when we are going up to see her for the day. It´s a day to sit down with her, give her the options, discuss the pitfalls and the upside of it all. To explain what we need as well as what we want for her needs ie space of our own, a community for her and no more than a 30min drive to work for OH. Unfortunately for us the best area for Mum is the furthest drive away for OH. so she has to be aware what we are giving up.
I´m going to have to explain why the house will have to go in my name not joint names (will not go down well) and also why that there are cheaper houses out there that are not suitable for us all and I won´t entertain.
For all of my dread I am pretty proud of her not once has she asked me to return to the UK. it has always been I will come there. :-S

At least she is closer for now Uzzi and you can visit and discuss things with her face to face, not over the phone when she could halt the call in midflow or you could get a message that she is unwell again and go haring back to the UK

I hope things work out well and she feels happy and settled after a while, best of luck to you all and you know where we are when you want to come and offload lol

Take care

UzziAndHerDogs Report 3 Apr 2012 05:17

Well she arrived safe or at least I presume so as the phone has been quiet. I do know the journey wasn´t that smooth as she couldn´t quite grasp that even tho´it´s a saga holiday she is still bound by the airlines luggage restrictions ! I guess she really means to stay as she has brought out THREE cases cost her an extra 300 quid. :-0

Liz I have no doubt at all that give me a week and I´ll be here pulling out my hair
Thanks everybody <3

I´m back and it´s not good, not good at all.
She did get to the hotel late last night as the flight was delayed.
Between 9.30 and 11am I have had 4 phone calls from the rep.

It started with them saying they are worried and thinking of sending her home. Mum had had a leakage accident on the way to the hotel last night. and it seems she spent the night in the same clothes. she hadn´t unpacked didn´t want carers in (thinks it´s their job) and said I will be there tomorrow.
I said no I won´t, I will be there on Thursday. ..Turns out she is a room with a bath ..I stated as part of the booking she had to have a walk in shower she can´t get in the bath. But anyway she was very confused. The rep went off to sort a shower room out.
Next call from the rep they don´t have a shower room until the 10th but as it´s their oversight they are willing to pay for a carer to get her washed and dressed until the room becomes available. is that okay with me ..Yes I said go tell Mum and say that I agreed
Next call from rep ..a disabled room that was booked from today has been cancelled and is now available so they are moving her into that. Is that okay.
yes just move her.
Next call from rep and mother yes she is being moved which she is happy with ..mother can´t see why they didn´t put her in that room last night so I have had to explain to her it was a mistake and she musn´t threaten to ring Saga or they will send her back to the UK. Just move, get showered and changed and go down and meet people ...
quick chat back with the rep and it´s do I want to arrange for a carer to go in...I really don´t know I can´t see why as she was quite capable of doing it herself in the UK hopefully she was just disorientated from the flight etc.
Gawd knows what I am going to be walking into when I get there on Thursday.
I really am now wondering what the eck I´m doing
:-S
