I always buy the lean steak mince. It doesn't have a lot of fat. Some of the liquid won't be fat. With any other mince I always used to bring it to the boil (in the microwave) then drain off visible fat. If I am making bolognese or chilli sauce I only fry it for about 30 - 40 minutes. If I am doing it in the oven I cook it for an hour. In the slow cooker I cook it on low for 9/10 hours.

Sorry Kay, I use shop mince quite a bit and my meals certainly do not taste like old cow sheds.

Ann...l bet the taste of the rump steaks are much better though....but old Cow Sheds....aww.
My nan always used her old mincer, screwed it to the kitchen table and off she went, also left overs from a roast:)

I buy steak mince (or OH does now - keep saying I/We when it should be OH!)
A basic mince mix ( 1 lb) - cook onions/garlic a few minutes - add mince and cook slowly until browned (about 10 mins) just cover with stock/water and simmer for 30 minutes at max.

Remember this is mince (tiny bits of meat not cubes) - does not need long cooking.

Do not have lots of fat etc. Perhaps it is prolonged cooking which gives this, I do not know.

I cook it for about half an hour ,with nothing added and leave it in the pan overnight, with the lid on. the way my gt nan showed me in the days before fridges were invented [showing my age now ,lol
By morning ,all the fat will be at the top of the pan ,enabling you to skim it off using a draining spoon.
If you use a good steak mince ,there will be no fat ,just a nice jelly which i leave in.
Only after removing the fat ,do i add onion ,salt and pepper with a couple of oxo cubes .Fred. :-)
Always find that Morrisons mince seems to have far less fat in than any other supermarket brand.

We don't eat much red meat at all so use turkey mince cooked just the same as beef with carrots and onions. I make turkeyburgers with a touch of sage in, lovely.

Some interesting replies:)

Chris...yeh l know what you mean about the pieces of mince being small, but its so soft and tender when you cook it longer. l generally find the mince is abit hard especially if only done for half hr.

MMA...the shepherds pie sounds lovely.

Caz.... my sister does'nt eat much red meats, she'll eat pork.
Never tried turkey in place of red meat, will have to have ago:)

Badger....never tried Morrisons, our nearest is Ross bit too far just for shopping. Our butchers mince is quite fatty, all the other meat he has is great, so tend to use Waitrose.

The mince l cooked went down a treat with a neighbour, l had some last night too and vic is just finishing it off, twas scrummy:)

Sorry AnninGlos, I found this interesting,

Sorry Kay, I use shop mice quite a bit and my meals certainly do not taste like old cow sheds.

I am sure shop MICE do taste different. :-D

I usually cook my mince for about an hour and drain the fat off.

Cheers

Ingrid, I was also going to comment on AnninGlos eating shop mice. I was thinking of offering her some of the rats that I have been catching.

Just a thought ,one and all .
While i love me Shepherds pie ,and cottage pie ,it it comes to it ,i was caught out while on holiday last year ,with no butcher in the village ,and happened to notice a sign for Asda at the side of the road.
Going there ,i noticed packet mixes on a shelf ,and came across one labled,Meat Free savoury Mince ,and thought ,[Why not .tis an emergency].
This mix ,made up as instructed + a couple of oxo cubes ,is to die for folks ,i kid you not.
With your mashed tattie on the top ,it is as good as your own made ,any day, ideal in a tight corner for a delicious ,quick meal
Also notice that Morrisons do one labled shepherds pie mix ,which is just as good ,,.
We used this at Carla Gran holiday park last year and it served four of us ,with a generous helping each.Fred. :-D

When I do it I use Miced Steak, have to put a little fat with it (Its Very Lean) fry it with a little Garlic, Onions Soy Sauce and Tomatoe Puree, bung it in the oven for about half an hour, make some Mash adding Chees to it,Shove it back in the oven till the top is brown.then eat it with a Thick Onion Gravy and a few Peas. :-D :-D Tastes Good.
