We bought him a set-top box months ago and he has steadfastly refused to have anything to do with the remote control.

They started switching off the tv channels yesterday so, last night he could not watch his television,

Tough titty Fred. No sympathy jere.

Awww send him down the A27 and then he can watch my television, lol.

Sharron Report 8 Mar 2012 10:10

Now that is too awful to contemplate.

Traffic backing up where the four lanes are as they follow an electric wheelchair.

Think of the convoy rolling down the Eastern Road.

Now, are you really sure you would want that?

Sadly, this was the case with my Mum. She couldn't understand why she had to have 2 remotes and go via the set top box - it was utter disaster and constant phone calls meant that someone was always having to drive to hers to sort it. Half the time she was in tears as she couldn't get a channel and had fiddled about with the remotes so much, it was a big mess. In th end she was afraid to switch the thing on so didn't watch tv.

Finally, we got her a new tv with built in freeview.
Even now she sometimes gets in a pickle with it, so sticks to BBC1 only. Isn't that a shame.
I'm sure many elderly people must find the digital switchover thing confusing. :-S

Sharron Report 8 Mar 2012 10:16

It is not confusion with him Karen.

As he has been all his life, he is afraid of not being able to get it right first time.

Could be that he wants a new TV. Cyril down the road who is 98 has a new television.

Might be worth waiting for that one.

From one Fred to another ,i know how he feels ,i have trouble finding my way around Genes these days ,and after reading this thread ,i WON'T be asking for sympathy ,what a rotten lot ,you are [visions of Fred lost on the motorway ] just for a start he he .
Us oldies have trouble changing the remote batteries too, remember ,not easy for those with arthritic hands . :-(
Grumpy Fred ,this morning :-)

Island Report 8 Mar 2012 10:27

Perhaps he could be new best friends with Cyril? :-D

Have to say though, I'm amazed that none of our remotes have taken a flying lesson :-|

Sharron

Sharron Report 8 Mar 2012 10:33

Fred, i change the batteries.

He even has somebody to wipe his bum.You would think changing channels wouldn't be too much to ask.

He had better not take to shouting every time he wants to change channels or the wipers may find themselves with an extra task!

Janet Report 8 Mar 2012 10:36

Well as one who dreads anyone touching my television or the two remote controls, I have every sympathy for your dad. So there- lol- jl

Sharron

Sharron Report 8 Mar 2012 10:41

I don't want to touch his television.

He just needs to learn how to change channels himself. At the moment he is doing martyred so we can all appreciate how he is going without watching it. Poor old soul!

Kay????

Sharron Report 8 Mar 2012 10:56

You've met him then Kay.

If I did that I would feel a bit guilty if it rained.

Well, people going by might have to step out into a puddle to get past him.
Oh, no, that would be alright. They probably would have crossed over to the other side of the road already.

Well I have every sypmpathy with him. I don't think it's easy for the elderly to learn new things.
I'm not even elderly yet (I don't think) and I hate it when new stuff comes out on mobile phones, computers etc...cos I'm a complete numpty with new things.
There - you can give him my sympathy :-) :-)

Sharron

Sharron Report 8 Mar 2012 11:03

He has had over six months to get the hang of it.

Git that I am, I'm a thoughtful git. Thought it all through, gave him plenty of time, showed him how to do it, stayed around at a discrete distance to rectify any mistakes he might have made.

He made big show of ignoring the remote because that is where my git genes came from you see.

Now his recalcitrance has come back to bite him on the bum!
