a hermit! The phone rings seemingly constantly with scammers, sellers, random hoi polloi etc, at least twice a week someone knocks on the door promoting religion or trying to sign me up for charity giving...I just want to be left alone lol.

Where would you / do you go to retreat from the world?

George

George Report 18 Feb 2012 12:52

Do what I do, tell them all to bugger off, some of them who try to persist I use the words F*** off.
I know its rude but some people just don't get the message.

George :-) :-)

Possibly another reason not to grow a pampas grass in your front garden Rose ;-)

I like to shut myself in my greenhouse, with my radio on, where there's no phone and I can't hear the doorbell!

lol George, I'm too nice, though I am getting more abrupt with the phone calls, "I'm not interested , thankyou, Goodbye!" and phone down lol

Wend I think I need a shed or greenhouse :-D

Far too polite, you will get nowhere like that, be more aggressive. and with the ones who call at your door, be downright rude, they wont bother you again :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

You can add your phone to the telephone preference site , Its then illegal for any sellers etc to phone you .they can get fined by appropriate Offcom ? body.

You could also get your phone set up not to accept number withheld calls. and alos go ex directory so only giving out your phone nos to whom you want to have it.

i am afraid i dont answer the door to people who look like they may be selling religion ie Mormons who go around in two man groups . and JW.s who will often have a child with them for the AHH factor.

If i do get caught out I will say thank yoy but we are a practicing Catholice house and close the door before they go any further. A bit of a fib cos its OH who is Catholic .

It is annoying to get confronted on your own doorstep :-(

I seldom answer my phone, Rose, and keep it on permanent Answerphone (or is it spelled Ansafone? :-D). I also vet the doorbell ringers by squinting from behind the lace curtains. *sighs happily...heady stuff this hermit business, I would recommend it! :-D

Put a note on your door - no uninvited callers - thank you

Shirley, I am ex directory, but have found that the number I was given when I moved in was previously used by someone else and recycled by my internet provider, so I get lots of calls 'for' that person even though they have never lived here, that will hopefully change when I go with a different provider in a couple of weeks,

Agree saying you're Catholic works well with JWs :-)

Yesterday I spent some time on the phone arranging a new insurance for the car.

When the call had finished I was asked about house insurance and could they ring me next September before my house insurance is due. I asked if they would be on an 0845 number and was told yes. I told them I don't answer any 0845 numbers and he said he didn't know that I had a problem with them. I assured him that I didn't have a problem, other people might have, I just take one look at the phone and ignore it. I told him he may leave a message if he wanted.

I might have to pay a couple of pounds a month to have caller ID but its worth it. My phone is by the computer screen so I don't get disturbed. -jl

We have caller display and don't answer any calls with number withheld etc. Friends who are ex directory know to give three rings them ring back. We are too remote to get callers to the door.

A friend complained to BT and had her calls intercepted for a month. She had so few calls that she had to check the phone still worked!

I tried that ploy many many years ago RR - did not work for me - they started on the bible. Now I have a notice on front door for a number of years saying 'no JW's thank you' and they have to walk all the way down our long garden path before they see it as our door is at an angle from path!!!!

Worst ones are double glazing sales - heard OH ask recently - can you not use your eyes? Reply was well perhaps you would like to replace them!!!! He could not trust himself but said goodbye and closed door - then exploded!

On my occasional forays to 'town', i.e. the city rather than the small local market towns, I get seriously fed up with the 'charity muggers' in the high street. I hate shopping anyway, and they just add to the aggro! I tend to nip down alleys and back streets to avoid them. I also hate the 'nail products' sales people in department stores who lurk about and leap out unexpectedly. Just leave me alone to shop in peace!!!!

Rambling

Rambling Report 18 Feb 2012 13:18

Now what I 'could' do is present the religious callers with the charity forms to fill in and not let them go till they've signed up , and the charity callers I could address with "Hi, glad you've called, do you know Jesus?" and whip out a bible....

tempting lol :-D

Rose

Telephone preference can be done online but takes a month to kick in so not worth doing as you are getting a new number.
I would recommend putting the new number on the site as soon as you get it and mobiles too if you have them ..

We have our home nos and both mobiles on the Tel pref. and I did report one nos that constantly came through with texts for that scam "you can claim for your recent whiplash injury" The texts stopped!!.

Yes Man by Danny Wallace, read it.

Danny Wallace, a freelance radio producer for the BBC in London, takes three simple words uttered by a stranger on a bus—"Say yes more"—as a challenge and says "yes" to everything for a year. He says "yes" to pamphleteers on the street, the credit card offers stuffing his mailbox and solicitations on the Internet. He attends meetings with a group that believes aliens built the pyramids in Egypt, says "yes" to every invitation to go out on the town and furthers his career by saying "yes" in meetings with executives.
