There use to be a news reader on STV who had a lovely light Scottish accent, but the one thing that use to get me, was when he read the weather,

He use to say shars instead of showers. grrrrr. :-P :-S

On radio 4 - someone said deelegate, instead of delegate, and I hate it when the word decade is pronounced (usually by MP's) as decayed.

Has anyone else noticed, when answering a question, a lot of people begin their answer 'So'?.................

......Why?

Maggiewinchester I have, also when something is said it is said with a questioning tone.

All those mentioned irritate me as well.
One that really gets to me is when they leave out a "t" in the middle of a word.....And I often wonder why everything has to be....well basically.....
Completely superfluous.....or should that be.....superflUous???

I also agree with all the above, especially the "HARPAST" !

There was a comment in the Radio Times recently about the deterioration in the diction of actors, with particular reference to the recent "Birdsong"

Although I expect that would be "enunciation" really

And I thought it was my hearing that was going :-)

Regarding the pronunciation of Himalayas...my mum told me as a child that when her teacher was talking about the subject that it was always referred to as Himarrrrlyas.Perhaps that was how it was pronounce a hundred years ago and now it has done full circle.

Secretary is the one that annoys me. Why do they have to pronounce it seckertree....it's sec-re-tary.

Sharron

Sharron Report 7 Feb 2012 20:31

Being totally pedantic now. I think it is Himalaya with no S.

I may be wrong but I don;t remember harassed being pronounced with the emphasis on the second syilable before 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em'.

I particularly like the New Zealand accent although I have a special regard for the Welsh one too - but, I'm not telling you lot why!

Agree with all the above, but the one that currently irks me is the morning presenters saying "Thisssmorning" in one long word.
