What does everyone think about a county council having a huge empty car park every evening not available for use by ratepayers visiting the hospital across the road?

I PAID £8 RECENTLY FOR THE HOSPITAL CAR PARK WHEN I HAD TREATMENT,AND THATS WITH A BLUE BADGE,
ITS DISGUSTING.

No different in New Zealand except in several cities you will also get towed & have that hefty fine to pay as well as the original one JL.

I work in our local hospital and parking is a nightmare, but if you have an outpatient appt, all you have to do is pay the minimum, and if a clinic over runs (they all do) you do not have to pay the difference, speak to a member of staff. Sadly, this is never advertised in the car parks.

We were at the hospital yesterday as well as it being 2.00 to park, there were no parking spaces, they have condensed 2 sides of the hospital into one but haven increased the parking, this often results in you going to your appointment alone, i always like my husband to come in with me as i forget half of the stuff they say xx

It is bad that this council are not better organized. Write to them, write to your local councillor and get any patient support groups you can find to lobby them too.Write to hospital management suggesting they contact them too.

There are two sides to the hospital parking debate. You would often see people strolling into our local hospital car park when it was free who were wearing tennis whites. It was only a short walk from the courts to the hospital passing the pay car park.

People would park there and go to work in town so, it could be argued that they were the cause of the parking charges.

Its all a cunning scheme to get people out of their cars and on to public transport......if the public transport is there. :-|

And yes, it does seem stupid for the CC not to allow free public parking from say 6pm - 6am. They could easily leave the barriers up, and the Staff on Nights would know they might get trapped if they used it.

Truro operate a park and ride scheme. Stupidly it doesn't operate on a Sunday which really puts hospital workers or visitors at a disadvantage.

Sharron Report 1 Feb 2012 10:11

No doubt, if the barriers were up, boys would be in there in old Peugeots racing about.

Why are good things always abused?

Mads

Mads Report 1 Feb 2012 10:14

It goes down to the PCT not the CC. they are the ones that have control over parking etc,

And yes DET i agree with you, i get a bus to work now, its much cheaper than parking, and im never late.

Had this discussion countless time with our local hospital. Why can't they send a parking pass with your appointment? Many times we could not find a parking space in 2 hospitals I attend (even with a disabled badge). More than half the parking spaces are used by staff and even though at Glangwilli they increased the size of parking grounds you still can't park!!

This just adds to the stress that builds up prior to either admission or day case treatment.

We don't pay here, but its often full.
Making use of an empty car park at nights makes sense, but would residence take advantage, how would it work, even if a timed session was used. It would give someone a job though, checking the cars next morning etc:)

jude :-D

here in Cardiff, hospital car parking charges were scrapped a while ago, BUT, the largest hospital, University Hospital of Wales, is tied into a contract with a private company for years to come - and even blue badges have to pay

All the times we were visiting Daff or Melissa at UHW OH drove around until a disabled space became available cos I was not going to walk from the raised car park!

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 1 Feb 2012 11:34

Yes, Sharron. I see your point but it's not such a good car park for boy racers.

Anyway, I'm told that there's a security person on duty there in the evening. If that's so he could lock the barriers at about about 10 pm and the hospital ought to know that anyone parking in the hospital car park after that time must be visiting or staying with a very sick relative indeed and charges ought to be waived. (The hospital is not near a pub or shops - only the county council offices - so people would not want to use it unless they had to.)

I do understand that it will mean a loss of revenue to the hospital but just how much income does it receive from the security firm in charge of the car parking? Not a lot, I'll bet but I suppose it's keeping people in work so perhaps I shouldn't complain.

Island Report 1 Feb 2012 11:58

I know of a 'hospital' carpark where passing a ticket with time left onto someone else was clamped down on by changing the machines to ones which you have to key in your reg number.

Are 'hospital' car parks actually owned and managed by the hospital though? Surely they're council owned and heaven forbid any red tape could but cut without costing the tax payer thousands.

Regarding the coucil car park that is empty at night, it might be down to insurance.

I completely agree with points raised by others having spent many hours - and pounds - using hospital car parks in recent years but I'm just trying to see some logic.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 1 Feb 2012 12:06

th car parking fees at the University Hospital of Wales do not go to the hospital - they go to a private company !!!!!

If you go to Eastbourne Hospital and register your car number with them all you do is show your blue disablement badge on the way out (its scanned) its free. At the conquest in Hastings there are numerous places (Free) to use,**M**
