These cruise ships are actually very safe. Look at this clip to see just how much punishment they can take!

AnnCardiff Report 17 Jan 2012 15:37

well the lesson for disabled people going on cruises seems to be "put a lifebelt on when embarking" and do not remove it until the cruise is over - that way you'll be safe!!!

JoyBoroAngel Report 17 Jan 2012 13:19

its just been on the news
the harbour authorities told the captain
to get back on the boat and evacuate his passengers and he didnt

he could well be charged with manslaughter

Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 16 Jan 2012 22:25

did the ship sembark from there then where was the pilot? Surely if he was still on board he would of warned of the danger? I heard they was passing through

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 16 Jan 2012 21:11

I wonder how true are the stories by the survivors on the news that the only members of the crew to organise the evacuation of the ship were the stewards etc who were serving dinner. According to them the crew (officers etc) were first in the life boats. One said they pushed children out of the way to get there. Unfortunately the ship had only just embarked and had not had the safety measures explained. I suspect that people in a panic also don't see everything, they maybe imagined they had been abandoned.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 16 Jan 2012 20:49

the only reason the captain stayed on the ship
was to stop salvage rights
and the shame years ago of losing their ship
would live with them the rest of their lives
so easy option was to end it all

The classic case is the Oceanos in the Indian Ocean in 1991 when 2 British entertainers organised the rescue of the passengers after the Greek captain and his entire crew legged it in the lifeboats! There is some amazing amateur footage in this youtube clip.

my friends air steward and he told me
its discrimanation to be honest
but also good sense if you think about it

i think the same would apply on a boat like planes florence
they just dont tell you about it if your disabled

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 16 Jan 2012 19:55

Joy is right. Infirm passengers get in the way so are not assisted to the detriment of others - a sad but true fact of life, and there's no other way to do things. Anyone not fully mobile is not allowed to sit in a seat adjacent to an emergency exit.

In any mass panic situation, it always, without exception, turns into the survival of the fittest. There will be isolated cases of men - and women - standing back, or cases of self sacrifice, but it will be the exception rather than the rule. Most people today have never been confronted with a life threatening situation and once panic sets in all control is lost. I've seen it. It's impossible to direct people who are panic stricken and panic is infectious. So - the natural instinct is to protect your family or nearest and dearest and that is exactly what will happen.

if your on a plane its policey to leave the diabled till last
if they get stuck in the way

you could save a number of people in the time it takes
to ease then to the exit

makes sense in a way but shame for the disabled
