watching something on tele the other week and they said that the temp they advise is 21 c below that is considered too cold?

We have ours set about 18c at the most yes we have a woodburner as well in lounge and one in our bedroom but they are only on tickover to keep it at that temp and heating rarely comes on only if thy go out.

Dont think I could afford to have it at 21 all the time as would be prmanently on

Gwyn in Kent Report 15 Dec 2011 18:12

We have individual thermostats on each radiator, but only the ones in living-room, kitchen and bathroom are on. We don't like heated bedrooms.

We don't have an overall room thermostat, but it would be about the same as your's I'd guess Dawn.

21 would be way too warm for OH.

18 at the very most, and I turn it right down at night as the boiler is below my bedroom and if it kicks in wakes me up, sounds like a helicopter is landing lol.

21 - have individual rad thermostats apart from diningroom where there is a wall one and that is on 21.

Bedrooms are on No,.2 - do not like hot bedrooms. Bathroom heated rail/rad on No.3 whatever that might be.

Again depends on age and mobility - children running about and playing will not need higher temps whilst I have little mobility feel the cold quicker.

Curtians all lined and drawn/ walls cavity insulated some 30 years, loft insulated and boarded over plus double glazing.

Had a new boiler installed 2 years ago. Cannot see anything else to conserve heat but willing to learn!

Dawnieher3headaches

Dawnieher3headaches Report 15 Dec 2011 18:20

we dont have double glazing so guess if we dd have would be like toast in here at 18.

RR our boiler is behind the hideous gas fire in the front room so no danger of it waking me up mind you once asleep herd of elephants probably wouldnt wake me up.

I cant move much and sleep a lot so doesnt bother me what down here is like as I just crawl into bed and snuggle down and fire upstairs keeps bedroom warm enough.

19/20 but the heating goes off at 10.30 and comes on again at 6.30 then goes off at 10.30 and on again at 4.30pm. House stays warm, walls are insulated and double glazing fitted.

As I understand it the thermostat only governs the place it is situated. The heat from the radiators is supposed to be worked out by their size. So if the thermostat is in a cold hallway it could be switching the rest of the system to accommodate the hall.

I was told by the heating engineer that it was better to have individual thermostats.

My car is always set at 22 (unless I am freezing) and that feels comfortable.jl

I live in a cottage, and the thermostat is in the hall, so I set it at 30 because its not the ideal place to have a thermostat.

ChrisofWessex Report 15 Dec 2011 22:18

Now up to 1966 I had never had central heating and I daresay the greater majority of us did not.

What did we do? we wore warm clothing! I can recall putting my dau (b 1958) on the bed in her nappy/vest/nightie/matinee coat and folding in half, my well washed woollen shawl - laying on her on one end and rolling her in it like a papoose to keep her warm. We had a 3 bed house with solid concrete floors, one fireplace and one electric fire which I moved around.

An elderly lady on tv the other night said she was afraid to put her heating on - but she did not appear to be wearing warm clothing which would help.

No double glazing etc then. We keep heating on constant - always have done - as my engineer OH and various heating engineers have told me - less costly rather than have a boiler switching off and on and heating up from cold.

AnnCardiff Report 15 Dec 2011 22:28

I've completely changed my thinking on heating the house this winter - the money my lovely OH left in the building society is gleaning no interest whatsoever and funds are dipping quite low, so I now only have the bathroom radiator on upstairs cos let's face it, heat from downstairs goes upstairs anyway.

I put the radiators on downstairs for a few hours and then turn them off and put the gas fire on in the living room where I spend most evenings

I have a throw which I put over my knees and if needs be a put a fleece jacket on - if anyone calls they seem to think I'm on my way out!!! but I'm warm, so I donlt care

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 15 Dec 2011 22:32

Ann - what you do makes sense - you stay warm. I have a pashmina given to me - occasionally if I feel a chill - it is very handy for either throwing round my shoulders or across my leggies!
