It makes my heart bleed, when going into the supermarkets in mid Nivemeber, to see pots of Pointies. I know that, more often than not, they will be dead by Christmas, and at best have their lovely red bracts dropping. I refuse to buy them, but they are nice. Some people are lucky in being able to keep them.

I know they do not have flowers in the true sense but some leaves turn red giving a floral appearance. Julia - my son could make a stick grow. His first love is a rose and garden has them up fences, in ground, in pots etc. He also counts the blooms as he deheads them (sad I tell him) but informed me this year he had 135 blooms off one bush - I think it was Penny Lane.

Julia I could not believe either that damn thing every Christmas and he knows how old it is because it was his first Christmas in that house.

Julia Report 12 Dec 2011 13:29

Well, erm well. Even my greenfingers have never been successful in keeping one going from one year to the next.
Have you thought of red spray painting a few of the bracts, Pointies don't have flowers.
If taking this advice and you feel able to con the masses who will walk into your house this Christmas, I suggest you do this outside, or you will have red windows.
In other words, lob it on the tip, buy another, and don't try and be such an old meany, another year.

PS. I thought everyone knew you had to keep them in the dark. LOL

Well Holly - son has just chucked his out after 8 years as he decided it had become both too large and straggly. However it has remained in the centre of
his large bay window sill facing west for all of those 8 years! Bloomed every Christmas

This might amuse you Julia..

Every year, i buy a Poinsettia.
In the spring, as much as i don't like to do it, it ends up in the garden where i know it will die.
So this spring, i decided to keep the one i bought last Christmas.
It is lovely and healthy looking, very bushy and has doubled it size in height an width.
So much so, that it has blocked out the light from one of my kitchen windows.

The is no sign of any flowers whatsoever and so i googled last week to find out more information...........only to find that in order for it to flower again, it has to put in a dark place for two months during the spring :-|

So now i am in a quandry, do i throw the bleddy thing as far as i can throw it........or, buy a few imitation flowers and stick them in the pot!!

Decisions, decisions!!! :-D

Julia Report 11 Dec 2011 17:37

Don't forget the celery, grapes and pickled walnuts, to accompany.

Oh Chris, provided I am okey on the day, I do like my different wines with different courses, if only a small glass. Then after the Port, I have to have a small tincture of best Brandy.
Christmas is but once a year (thank Gawd).
