The problem is that it's against the school rules. If they make an exception for him then they would have to make an exception for others who broke the rules which would make having rules pointless.

Wrt boys having long hair, I see no problem so long as it's kept neat and tidy. If you banned boys from having long hair then you'd also have to ban girls from having long hair, otherwise it would be gender discrimination

schools have rules that i think may sound silly at times
but there must be a good reason for them

maybe they dont want the risk of him been bullied over a silly haircut

Meybe the next ( Statement) he wants to make, will be to go to school dressed as a fullblown Mohican Brave with tomahawk and bow and arrow.

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I honestly thought I would take the side of the school as I personally I believe that there have to be common sense rules that the school sets and which pupils have to abide by.

However, it isn't a matter of not conforming to a uniform or even a matter of health and safety.

It's his own hair which as long as it isn't effecting anything else (ie untidy/health and safety etc), shouldn't be a problem.

At a parents evening he was told it wasn't a problem.

He doesn't wear it up for school.

He was told he would be put into "remedial classes with unruly pupils" when he is an A grade student. This doesn't sit well with me. His education should come first and he isn't an unruly pupil.

I think times have moved on and personally i don't think haircuts if they're not a H&S issue etc shouldn't effect whether someone can get educated or not.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with individuality and I think it a shame if businesses reject a candidate just because of their hair (which in this case isn't up at school). Besides when will he get a chance to show any individuality if schools won't let him have this haircut and neither will employers.

In the corporate world employees are not allowed:

outrageous hair styles
visible tattoos
visible piercings.

To get on you HAVE to conform like it or not.

The parents said the school said it was ok.for him to have that hairstyle,.the school haven't confirmed or denied so I'm taking that with a pinch of salt..

Yes it's only a hairstyle..but this kind of *go on make me* stance some parents (and subsequently their children) take is a lot of what is wrong with schooling these days. When I was 11..I did as I was told and my parents made sure I did too and supported the school. A HUGE proportion do not and constantly push the boundaries.

I was flabbergasted when I was told that parents were being threatened with their child being excluded if they didn't stop OBJECTING and refusing to allow their children to attend detentions..I mean REALLY!!! No wonder the children were running amok when their parents were behaving like this.

There is a time in your life to rebel and a time to just do as you're told and imho ...11 is the time you conform x

The hair rule is part of his overall uniform. My daughters school has the same rules.

Rules are set out before the child accepts the place offered to them so by accepting they will have to follow the rules.

My suggestion to the parents would be if they want their son to express himself that much, then pay for home tutoring.

In real life there are rules in all aspects of life, why should people get away with breaking them when others make the effort to follow them

Certain jobs wouldn't even glance at a candidate with a hair cut like that, Time some people started waking up & start smelling the coffee.

PS parents look skanky anyway ;-) :-D
