My husband is a wheelchair user and I have a print out for people who use disabled bays and don't have a blue badge. "Thank you for using a disabled bay, would you also like my disabilty"

We both have a blue badge but one car and i dont drive. Mine is an advantage for me when I go out with someone else and I cant walk far. I have a radar key, but I fumble with it and can wet myself if i dont hurry to the ordinary loos and trust to luck that i will be able to stand up again!
I mostly shop at supermarkets where we can get the trolley to the car easily as neither of us can carry a load of shopping. I dont mind paying for a parking space, its the room needed to get in and out of the car I want.

I have seen parents park in disable bays with no badge on display .its not just them .good thing if they are caught & fined more should be done to stop the abuse of the facility!!

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 14 Oct 2011 12:46

I don't think it is important the previous stop was a clinic etc. what matters is this stop. If the disabled person remains in the car, then they should be using a normal parking space. Apparently it isn't illegal to use a disabled bay in this manner, but is nevertheless still inconsiderate.

Parent and toddler parking space abuse can be even worse, but unfortunately is not covered by any legislation, unless, of course they park in a disabled bay.

Barbra Report 14 Oct 2011 12:04

Abuse of the badge is seen in a lot of car parks .folks with young children use them instead of just going a bit futher down to use child & parent bay .
my oh has a badge i drive .drop him at shop door & then park up & go into the shop .its a sore point with me as so many park on theses spaces & they shouldnt ,

I suppose if we see the disabled person staying in the car while able bodied person runs into shop, we have no way of knowing if the previous stop was clinic or hospital where disabled person did get out of car. But in the case Bob cites that is illegal use of the badge, and selfish.

IGP......

AT least that appears only to be bending the rules???

as opposed to someone I used to know taking the disabled persons' car on a shopping trip!!

InspectorGreenPen Report 14 Oct 2011 10:44

Near where I live it is a regular occurrence for the disabled person to remain in the car whilst the able bodied one jogs into the shop. They don't see it as doing anything wrong.

A friend of mine had the best idea. If he saw someone getting out of a car in a disabled spot he used to rush over, hold the door and ask if they required help. Nine times out of ten all he got was a mumbled response from the other person whose face usually ended up a tad red....!

Our mate has one. We take him out more often than we otherwise would.

See it has dual purpose, it gives him easier parking and a better social life., except that he usually forgets to bring it.

The amount i see abuse the badges is appalling..

also its a offence if the disabled person ..doesnt get out of the car ..and the driver does..maybe if some read the book ..the amount of young peaple i see also ..they run in shops and back out ..

i agree with sue ..

Personally I'd tie both their legs together, disable one arm and blindfold them all for a month!

Then they'd know a little about disabilities.

Don;t start me on Radar keys, I suggested these should be issued FOC to anyone receiving DLA.

The able bodied pee for free and we have to pay to go!!!!! that contravenes the DDA in my book.
