You will have to take the bull by the horn and tell her NO ,You wont be covered for injury and am not covered by Health and Safety regulations . Tell her you werent employed as a decorator and apart from that you have never wielded a paint brush so wouldnt know how to do it anyway.

If she still insists then tell her you will have to consult with senior management for their guidance, Bet that will scare. her

Annie, Just tell her firmly that you are sorry but you are not going to do it because she might get into trouble if you have an accident with the paint and you won't be covered by insurance for painting. Then stick to what you have said.

It's time now to get in touch with the bosses that are above her and tell them what you are expected to do..

Also get a letter from your doctor saying that you CANNOT do painting, climbing as you have high blood pressure and that it is against H and S guidlines..

I really wouldn't use the blood pressure as a reason as its would sound as if you would do but !!!. Personally i would tell her decorating isnt something you can do and its not part of your terms of employment anyway ,Please don let her bully you into saying yes as it will be the short end of the straw .
You could say your hubby is a builder he can give her an estimate !! :-D

Sue i think i may have to see what my doctor says on any of the work i do.When i have been on holiday my bp is down but he will say give up the job that i cant afford to do

If you get sick or injured doing a job you shouldn't be doing you'll be worse off. A firm NO is all that should be needed.

Sue In Yorkshire. Report 5 Oct 2011 22:40

You are going to have to be very tough with her and put your foot down with a firm hand,,,and say NO with meaning..and keep saying NO.

Just don't do it no matter what she says..
Aren't you in a union as you could bring them in and they would certainly be telling her in no uncertain terms that she will have to get a painter in to do the work.

ann Report 5 Oct 2011 22:49

No union so me on my own.Hubby says i must not do it.She does so many things she should not do.She always gets away with it.I know she has been reported by a outside company for being unprofessional but our company will not do anything about it

Listen to Sue in Leeds Grannie. She knows what is what in these circumstances. I have met her on numerous occasions and she is fine in her suggestions.

Grannie..

Well if your not in a union..PLEASE PLEASE get in touch with Citizens Advice Bureau as they deal with massive problems what you have been having all the time you have been working there.

And look to downloading Health and Safety booklet or ask CAB for one then you can quote it verbatim to her.

The problem with a person like your boss is that everytime you give way and do what she tells you to the further she will go. Sooner or later you have to put your foot down. Good advice from Sue in Leeds......oh and George :-D

I always think of you lot as my support.I will say no tomorrow.I know she is wrong. We get a budget for this sort of thing but she is money mad and always wants to save it.I always think dont use it and lose it.She once told me to write to benefits and sign my name for a resident that we could not get hold of so we could get the money and not be in arrears. That was a deffo no and she never pushed me since on that.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 5 Oct 2011 23:16

As you say - the problem with not spending the budget is that it sends the message that you don't need it and then you will lose it. Good luck - it can be difficult to say no but this time you really need to.

Grannie,,just an aside ...write NO ON YOUR FOREHEAD and keep pointing to it if she asks you to do any job which is not in your contract....

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 5 Oct 2011 23:31

You cannot use your health as an excuse and you shouldn't need to.

It's not in your contract that you undertake maintenance therefore you will not do it.

If she gets nasty, ask her for a risk assessment and method statement. and a copy of her public liability insurance (you wouldn't want to be uninsured) and I'm pretty sure on her statement before the quote she will have said contractors will be employed. You'll also need the COSHH assessments for any paint/thinners/cleaning materials and safety data sheets.

All of which you are ENTITLED to before even considering helping out.
