The BBC will only broadcast half the races LIVE plus the relevent qualies.
The rest they will show as highlights programmes.
Still a big swizz but at least we won't miss out completely.

Oh, and all of the races will be broadcast on Radio 5 LOL Great :-\

Sue how do you know it costs £1.20 per race? Not that I don't believe you, was just wondering where you got the figure from.

As an aside the licence for the BBC is, I believe, up for review in 2013, as to whether it will carry on or, possibly but unlikely, be abolished.

Don't worry Frank - a lot of your 'English cousins' couldn't give a flying fig about the London Olympics either.

All I was pointing out was the overkill of coverage already with of course the problem that we are quite far away from the epicenter of this event and lack the fervour of our English cousins............

The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.

The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.

Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.

BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races.

Both companies will broadcast in high definition.



Deal keeps F1 with BBC for longer, says director of sport Barbara Slater

Races screened by the BBC will be live on the BBC Sport website for UK users.

The BBC will have highlights on TV, online and mobile for any race it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.

"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence-fee payers."

Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone told BBC Sport: "It's super for F1. It will mean a lot more coverage for the sport.

"There'll be highlights as well as live coverage on two different networks now, so we get the best of both worlds."

Christian Horner, the team principal of world champions Red Bull, said it would have been a "disaster" if F1 was no longer on the BBC.

"The BBC sets the standard for F1 coverage across the world," Horner said.

"This is an agreement that safeguards the sport on the BBC, albeit reduced from what we are used to. And Sky opens up new avenues. So rather than losing the sport from the BBC, I think this was the most sensible way to move forward."

The other day we had wall to wall news on BBC all day about the fact that there was one year to go in the great Olympics countdown as well as a one hour program all about the London Olympics and even after all that coverage, they still over ran their time slot by four minutes....... what ? :-S :-S :-S

Does Sky, during a sporting occasion have adverts every 8 minutes or so?when ITV had F1 the coverage was AWFUL........

I'm really not suprised. If I put down on paper what I thought about the Murdochs I would probaly be sued for deformation of character or some such. After the phone hacking I'm so pleased I've never subcribed to help build their corrupt empire.

GB you are sooo right re athletics, OH was hopping mad when he couldn't get coverage of an event.

The BBC have produced some superb dramas, which due cost a fortune, but they sell them worldwide.

Why they continue to produce absolute dross for the dumbed down market who knows?

The cost for screening one race for each F1 is approx £1.20, I'd be quite happy to pay that much extra for each race so I guess would the majority of fans to keep it on the BBC.

Do not start me on rugby coverage when we can't see England play without coughing up money!!!

They advertise new programmes then you realise they are on BBC3.

Tonight watching BBC3 on my computer for the athletics. Why is that not being shown on BBC1 or BBC 2

It has been said that if someone has a sky sub (which in this instance includes sports), they can register so that they can stream programmes directly to their computer - edit they get given a code or something

But you didn't hear it from me, and may be an old wives tale. :-)

DET, good idea but that wouldn't cater for the time differences for a lot of races plus I rely on OH to drive the cripmobile and he works 50% weekends.
