According to the press he tried to commit suicide. He had a similar previous incident some 5-6 years ago re a dog.

We have been dogless for some 3 years now but in previous years with all of the dogs we owned, in hot weather they were exercised early in the morning even if it necessitated rising earlier and walked again late at night.

Yes, I read the report. Couldn't believe what I was reading. If the report was correct he left the dogs in the car then travelled to the Olympia site where he was on duty. Somebody said there was no need for the dogs to be in the car as there are holding kennels on site.

Still getting mixed reports here, but it seems he 'forgot' about the dogs, then when he was told they had died, he threw himself from the car. Looks like the guy is having a breakdown of some sort, but after all I've said before, he has apparently done this before and was disciplined for it, so why oh why was he put in charge of dogs again?

I certainly have less sympathy for him today than I did yesterday.

Report on Channel 4 News 10 minutes ago, the dogs were left in the officer's own car while he attended a meeting. He injured his hands when he threw himself onto a colleague's car on hearing the news about the dogs. I often attend dog shows and am amazed how often they have to ask for the owner of such and such a car to return because one or more dogs are in distress. I even heard a stupid spokesperson from the RSPA say that car windows should be left slightly open if there are dogs inside, which is totally ineffective and dangerous when a vehicle is left standing in bright sunlight.

Makes it doubly worse as the puppies were found at a training centre,,,,!

I've tried to reply so many times and ended up pushing the back button.

I'm actually really cross about this...doubly so now I know he's done it before.

Let's hope everyone learns a lesson this time....and it never happens again....for the sake of other poor dogs just devotedly doing their jobs and trusting that they're going to be well cared for in return...

I'll say no more x

Final comment on this.

It's not just down to the officer concerned. If he had done this before, then why did the powers that be decide it was alright for him to continue to look after dogs? If this had been Joe Public they would have been banned for life. The responsibility has to lie with the bosses as well as the officer concerned.

Awww.......poor dogs.

My Henry has lots of fur and hates the heat.....I stay at home and only take him out when it is evening....even then it may be too warm......I hose him down many times during the day......I wouldn't sit in a car myself, let alone leave him in it.....poor dogs :-S

I bet we do too Susan

Muffyxx Report 29 Jun 2011 08:53

Susan I had to do the same with Scarlett and Harper on Monday...even though Scarlett has had a grade one haircut (looks like a sheared lamb lol) she was absolutely roasting ...and Harper only has her baby coat but it's still quite dense...both of them were panting like crazy.

I got the girls old toddler paddling pool out and let the dogs play in it in the shade...it was hysterical...Her majesty Fleur the collie wouldn't partake though....she doesn't *do* water lol.

I wouldn't have dreamt of walking them.. less still of putting them in the car...even in the evening when the temperature had dropped slightly it was still so humid they kept diving outside and having a splash to cool off.

I really hope there are no reports of this happening to kids or other dogs. I shall certainly be keeping my eyes open for it now when I'm out and about.....x

the responsiblity for the welfare of any animal lies with who ever has charge of it.

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 29 Jun 2011 12:13

I agree with that Kay, but the point I'm making is that this particular officer has a record of doing exactly the same thing, so why did the powers that be give him that responsibility again?

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 29 Jun 2011 18:04

Teresa - apparently it is alleged he also received his promotion some time after the first incident.

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 29 Jun 2011 20:53

Yes I heard that too, though I should think the promotion wasn't for his work with dogs, but other police work.
