......

It’s easy to criticise someone else who makes lots of contributions to the boards, either in terms of threads that you personally may not have interest in, or agree with, or in making suggestion to the management that may improve the members experience of GR overall. In the past there have been many threads for example that I have found too frivolous (to the point of inane lol,) or annoying because the poster had an opposing point of view to myself and could not be argued with.

But the point is that person IS contributing, not sitting back looking in and moaning about the content. How many times have we read or said “there’s nothing on the boards to add to tonight”? well there won’t be unless people post something, not just sit there moaning about those who do!

It has been said that some members post because they like the sound of their own voice, maybe they/I do lol. Nonetheless they have something to say, ( and say it in their own way) either to tackle a subject, make a suggestion or help with a query.

No-one is trying to self-appointedly (is that a word ?) “run GR” or have a monopoly of the boards, just that some have more to say and they may be more ‘noticeable’ because of the sparcity of other posters.
That may be because of the time they have, or their nature, or just their experience of ’organising’ at work which gives them an insight into what works and what doesn‘t.

I personally see GR as different to many paid sites, and by the nature of its boards as a kind of a co-operative, it’s run by a company yes who make the final decisions but the input of members is especially important to its success, so why not make a contribution to that if you feel the site is worth having? Not just grumble because someone else is doing so

If you don’t like the voices you’re ‘hearing’ , add your own and give us all something to read and enjoy ! :-) :-)

PS It's not my intention to tell anyone what to do,( though I don't doubt someone will interpret it that way and comment elsewhere ;)) just making the suggestion that if you feel strongly that you don't like what you see, the best way to change it is by contributing what you DO like :-D

Kay????

Kay???? Report 4 Jun 2011 11:58

Are we talking of people who suffer meglomania or grandosity. ;-)

Rambling

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 12:07

No I'm not Kay, no one can be megalomaniac or grandiose if, as I say, other people bother to contribute...there can only be a monopoly ( and in my opinion there isn't one anyway!) of 'one voice' if everyone else 'lets there be' .

The boards had a flurry of activity following the title changes and the avatars, now they've gone quiet again except for those who have time or inclination to make more contributions 'per head' as it were lol.

I'm just saying, if you grumble about something but do nothing to change it then you shouldn't grumble lolol ...bit like saying you hate the Conservative govt/or Labour/ or whoever...but never bothering to vote?

Rambling

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 12:14

didn't want to edit the above, Kay , but yes of course there are people whose posts are more 'prominent' than others, hasn't it always been like that? whether one liked that particular person or not there have always been names that 'stood out' on the board, either because of what they said or just the number of times they contributed.

:-)

Personally I'm just hacked off that I missed a friday night bun fight... ;-)

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 12:27

passes Muffy a chocolate meringue, closest I've got to a bun lol

But you are a 'case in point' I guess lol, your name was one that was on the boards quite frequently for years from when I joined , along with lots of others who post infrequently now or who have gone completely...

i am sure at some times 'some' other members might have thought "oh no not Muffy again" LOLOL just as I KNOW some think "oh no not Rose again"....you could put ANY name in that gap "oh no not **** again" lol ;)

Muffyxx Report 4 Jun 2011 12:35

Speaking for myself I got heartily sick and tired of the*poor me* culture on here and when good friends of mine were caught in that cross fire the magic went from this site for me.

I rejoined on a whim one evening...and tbh I probably won't be renewing next month...it's just not the same.

There does seem to be a core of people who resort to personal insults if your point of view dares to differ from theirs...and there are some whose posts I don't bother to read anymore for that reason ..one glance at the name at the top of the post..and I scan down lol.

I think an ignore button would be a fab addition to the site...that way if people aren't interested in what (for example) I have to say ..they don't have to be bothered even seeing it..and conversely it would mean that I can post in peace without being rr'd at every opportunity because my very presence insults them lol x

cant belive i missed a spat, ill have to stop having a life n come on more often ;-)

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 12:49

Muffy , I think we've all felt the loss of individuals who kept the boards interesting to us personally... there are two people in particular I miss on here, for their 'balance' in debates , I think it's ok to name Daff as one of those ? because there isn't anyone who dislikes her lol.

I read the posts of someone who has opinions on some subjects which are totally opposite to my own on subjects that matter to me , and sometimes it is a struggle for me to be 'pleasant' lol, but I don't think I would press an ignore button, because I'd prefer to give some balancing views to the 'debate'.

But I can see your point that if there was an ignore button, people could use it to avoid confrontation...then again if I thought X was likely to be discussing me on a thread I couldn't see I'd want to know what was said ;-)

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 4 Jun 2011 12:51

Ha ha that's where we differ Rose...what I don't see won't bother me lol.

I miss Daff too...amongst many others...too many others x

Rose,
Some folk are excessively ambitious to grandiose, and feel the need to impress on boards.

I know several GR members that are really frighten to add their free speech because of this.

That is why I'm sure the threads go quiet after such times when disagreements have got a little out of hand.

I have this as my past time and enjoy all the threads,

And will continue to do so.....

Up to a point Muffy, but when what's been said comes back to me, if it's the truth fine...if it's a malicious spiteful lie then yes it does bother me...because I know what effect that can sometimes have on 'real life'.

'Emma' Report 4 Jun 2011 13:06

Hi Rose and all, must say I have never analysed the threads to
any great degree. Like the debates, banter and sheer silliness of
some, variety is the spice of life they say. Have no problem with anyone
who takes over a thread I started, cause have been known to get carried
away myself at times (I apologise for that)
Re debates it can get heated at times but all need to have the opportunity
to give their view and like yourself Rose do not agree with some of them,
I keep my mouth shut on a lot of subjects as I know I will offend.
Miss all the WUMS who come on to threads and spoil it for others, that
pleases me as they are not worth getting upset over imho.
There are great orators on here with great confidence and some like myself
who most of the time just want a bit of fun.lolx

Allo Marilyn...long time no see !!!! ~~~~~s back.

I've truly gone past caring Rose. Some of the ridiculous things I've had levelled at me on here...an affair with my best mate's husband FGS.for one..my parenting skills questioned by a coward who didn't use their own ID on another occasion.....and each time I spoke out to defend myself it was me on the naughty step lololol..go figure !

Nowadays I just think...those who know me know...those who don't ...don't matter. x

Rambling

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 13:06

I don't know really know what the term 'grandiose' implies Marilyn?

Nor would I say that I see anyone posting on here that does so because they feel the need to impress , I have my own opinions on lots of things quite firmly set in stone, I won't move on them for anyone, because I believe I am 'right'. ( that phrase "I am always right" is said tongue in cheek...because I'm not, but when I am I AM lol).

Here's a general thought... Why should anyone have to change their natural manner of 'speech' in order to NOT sound grandiose? as an example lol I use, sometimes, quite long words, when I talk to someone who doesn't (like the lady next door) should I only use simple words.? I am not being 'pretentious' by using those long words lol, they are usually words that my family use habitually...not meant to be 'posh' in any way.

Rambling Report 4 Jun 2011 13:14

I know Muffy, what was levelled at you ( and friends) was appalling and very unfairly treated. Hopefully the new system of reporting abuse will ensure that doesn't happen again...or at least that GR moves faster on recognising who is the instigator and removing them.

I don't think it's going to make a blind bit of difference Rose tbh. They don't READ what is happening as a whole.just the snapshots that they receive through the r and r's....they're not bothered with the chat boards...they're here as a bonus...so they put minimum effort into them and it shows .

For all that people moaned and groaned about some of the bun fights on here...I bet if we had the view counter in days gone by THOSE threads would be the most read out of the lot....used to get people talking and bonding too in an odd kind of way..

When you wipe out the characters and the edginess..you get the boards you deserve...bland.x
