I take them, it took about a week to start kicking in. I felt no different those first weeks, well maybe a bit giggly on and off lol !

They really made a differance, and I'm still on them through choice 2 years on. Just the lowest dose, but it does take the edge off the anxiety which made me so ill at the time :-)

Tinkers you have a post and replies on the depression thread. You need to go to the end of the thread. At the top of the thread where it says post date, if you click on there it will put the last post first, you can then go back a bit and find your post.

Over the years I have needed antid's at times but was given Citalopram for my ocd. It didn't make a difference and I haven't taken antid's for years now, altho still anxious and depressed and stressed. I do try other things tho.

I find Rescue Remedy helps a lot, and usually it's safe to take it with antid's, just check with a pharmacist. I had access to the phone number of the pharmacist at our local mental health hospital so he was helpful at the time I needed advice. ( I have a booklet about all the different antid's and his number because I helped run an o.c.d. support group a while back.)

I also found some drops (tincture) by Vogel called Passiflora complex and these help when I take them to make me less weepy and on edge. Haven't used them for a while as mine ran out. They are around £9 or so for a bottle - you add 20 drops to a little water water twice a day and they last for about a month I think. I laughingly say it tastes like weedkiller altho the taste goes immediately you have swallowed the liquid back. I hasten to add I have never taken weedkiller but imagine it's how it would taste. They are made from Passionflower and oats, and even eating oats can help you be a little calmer. I am pretty sure they are safe to take with antid's but do check to be sure.
Another thing I tried was 5htp instead of antid's - you must never take both items at the same time, but they helped a lot too, just seemed more natural than antid's and helped me but they aren't cheap. H & B have offers on them sometimes so then I stock up but haven't been able to afford any for a while. Must get to H & B and see if they are half price now.

The best thing is to give the medication at least three weeks to kick in and go from there. I hope the citalopram works for you but do remember, there is usually someone around on the boards to talk with if you feel low.

I was prescribed citalopram when I was a bit depressed. I had to start with a quarter of one for a couple of days, then half for a few more days then go to a whole one, but I was feeling quite a bit better, so the doc said to stay on half one. I believe in going to the doc as soon as I feel depressed, it doesnt help to leave it until you are deep in the black hole, takes longer to climb out.

I am still taking half a tab at night, because they help with the restless legs syndrome. I think they are also helping with my random sneezing fits. I used to sneeze 30 times in a row and couldnt pin it down to any specific thing as the fits were so random. I am thinking of asking the doc if there is a milder antid. I can take, as it is a bit of a pain having to cut the tabs in half all the time. I did buy a pill cutter, but I find it difficult to get the pills to sit in the correct position for cutting down the line, though it probably doesnt matter, but I am a perfectionist!

I think sunshine can help. At midday when the sun is coming in the window beside me I often turn to face it to soak up as much as I can. Getting out for a walk can also help.

Huia.
